But we have looked like amateurs amongst the big boys in the transfer market. Significant lack of quality, due diligence done, overpriced transfer fees and long terms contracts. Had our pants pulled down left right and centre. You live and die by your recruitment, and it doesn’t need a huge over analyse as to why we will likely fall short of safety.
Ashton, Werhun & Probert on 21:02 - Feb 1 with 4745 views | SaffronWaldenBlues | I agree the recruitment has been poor, it seemed illogical to bring in that many Championship players for that sort of money. We’d finished streets ahead of Hull, Sunderland, Blackburn and co. and that’s where we recruited from alongside Burnley, who were absolutely dire in the Premier League. We could have kept what we had and got away with bringing in just Delap, Hutch and Cajuste and we’d probably have the same amount of points we have now.

Think there’s an element that the club is still catching up in areas. Think it’s easy to write these players off at this Moment in time because of where we are but the time to judge our business will be in 18 months time with a longer term hat on. We’ve lost connections and a spirit with the new players coming in currently and we may never get the connections back that we had but as long as we are in a better shape as a club, than when we went up I will be ok with that.

I think they'll be good in the Champ, but I'm not sure there's much profit on the prices we've paid, aside from Delap (buyback speculation aside). I guess we suffer from a lack of overseas scouting knowledge.

Those connections and spirit with the players, is more important to me than striving to finish 17th in the premier league. Give me a Kayden Jackson, JD, Mass, Chaplin, Woolfy etc any day over many of our new players. [Post edited 1 Feb 21:21]

Think we have the basis of a very good team in the championship. Midfield will need surgery whatever league we are in as well as a keeper before departures.

O’Shea, Delap and Cajuste - the only players who you think can operate at this level we’ve bought in, and I suspect Enciso will fall into that category as well, he looked sharp. But beyond that, with the recruitment bought in, it’s been really poor. [Post edited 1 Feb 21:51]

We had the change that squad up to evolve and improve in to the PL. The problem is we haven’t improved on that squad, we’ve just replaced them like for like with other Championship players. All whilst costing us £150m.

The reality is it doesn’t take a high level recruitment programme to scan the continental market with the endless amounts of software and data available - clubs are scoping the continents down in the Championship. We were well aware throughout last season PL was a distinct possibility and had ample opportunity to get our house in order. Feels like a lazy excuse for poor recruitment.
Ashton, Werhun & Probert on 22:34 - Feb 1 with 3730 views | Blue_Heath | Totally agree with OP but realistically what experienced prem players could we have got? We spent too much on same positions should have gone for less players but better quality. Other than Delap and perhaps O'Shea the rest have plummeted in value.

It’s all really easy when you put it like that… I’m sure your high level of expertise in that area is wasted in whatever day job you currently do. We all know the club was run down in all areas, so it’s not much of a leap to suggest that we’ve been left behind in the scouting arena and there would be work to do there. Could we have utilised the foreign market more, yeah I’m sure we could have have done, but that is no guarantee, look at what Norwich done, got a load of foreign guys for half the price and I can’t recall many of them being a success. As I said I don’t think we can fully judge whether there has been poor recruitment until further down the line. For this year it’s easy to say it’s been poor but these are a younger group who could grow with us rather than a group of older players. Did we expect to stay up this year, for me me no, I hoped we would but that’s all.

That’s rubbish. You are telling me if you were offered those players we have got in on paper vs last years squad you would have said no to the majority of them? Come on be realistic. Whilst they might not have the same connections as the squad from Last year, this squad has been together for 5/6 months so far and is being put together in a incredibly hard environment.

This. I think some fans have a very blue-tinted spectacled idea of how attractive we are as a team to these PL quality players. There weren't exactly queues of players lining up to join us. Reality bites.

That team was so feelgood and such fun to follow - felt like KM, players and us fans were one big band of brothers and sisters; not surprising we’re missing it. Think it’s hugely unfair to heap blame on MA, KM and recruitment team though. Only a few months ago, the critics were heaping praise on them! I have no doubt whatsoever that they’ve been working furiously overtime to try and get suitable deals done, but the odds are stacked against us in terms of availability, who’s able/willing to come here that we could afford + stay within Prem fiscal rules. They were able to be recruitment magicians in the Championship and L1, but we just don’t have the same clout in the Prem, and that’s not for the lack of their trying. And as far as strategy goes, MA and recruitment team didn’t have the benefit of hindsight last summer that some of their armchair critics are employing now!

Why have we bought Philogene? Yes we had a squad of battlers. They were with the fans.

Imagine writing of players who are 20 - who have played less than 10 games in the premier league I remember when people said harry kane was the worst player in the world and league 2 standard. With experience comes performances and growth . Writing off England under 21 players after such little time - is ridiculous Some of our fanbase are just thick
Ashton, Werhun & Probert on 07:52 - Feb 2 with 2844 views | PrideOfTheEast | We’ve clearly got the goalkeeper wrong, and as lots have been saying since August our lack of support for Delap up top is a miss. Phillips has also been very disappointing. I think it’s Muric and Phillips that stand out as not having worked. GK was always going to be fundamental and I suppose Phillips was our attempt at getting a seasoned premier league CM but he’s not really delivered has he. Cajuste was great yesterday I thought.

I think your final sentence is absolutely the issue. We all know that during the Marcus Evans era every part of the club was run down and that includes our scouting network; I believe the overseas scouts were virtually non-existent by the time Gamechanger took over. These things can’t just be rebuilt overnight and we have undoubtedly been severely hampered by our lack of overseas knowledge. Therefore we’ve shopped in markets we know and brought in players that are mostly young but untested at the highest level. I don’t think any (bar Muric I’m sorry to say) are poor buys or sh@t players but they were always likely to find the step up extremely difficult. Yes, yesterday was a rather painful kick to the testicles and yes I believe we will ultimately go down but I also believe that MA, KM et al were looking beyond this season and I’m sure feel that these players would be well placed to take us straight back up again. No doubt some will call me naive etc etc but I just can’t buy into all the overly dramatic stuff II’ve read on here today about KM being out of his depth, a major clear out needed etc, staying up was always likely to be beyond us but whilst we still have a chance I will not give up and regardless of the outcome I remain optimistic that our great club is in a far healthier position than I thought possible just a few short years ago. Maybe I feel like this because I’ve supported us for 50+ years and seen it all before, the ups and downs. Its called being a supporter
