The decline post-Robson at Ipswich is only matched by the decline in Nottingham Forest post-Clough in terms of a formerly competitive club falling away. It's not just the lack of winning a trophy, we have only managed 6 seasons in the top flight in nearly 40 years now. However in terms of bang for our buck, our 6 seasons in the top flight have yielded two European campaigns, so we are still punching in that regard!
Ipswich is a big enough club on paper to win competitions such as the League Cup and even the rebranded Intertoto-Conference League which is also now a "major honour" according to the Sky Sports FC brigade. However, with all the financial constraints/rules we have, and the fact that 17 clubs are now tearing away from the rest, it's going to be really hard for us to reach that level of achievement again unless something fundamental changes in English football.
