Strange how your memory isn’t always reliable:I had in my head that Mickys equaliser was on a par with Ricky Villa’s FA Cup Winner for Spurs. On reflection, I think I over egged that a little.

28 years ago today on 18:54 - May 10 with 1476 views | IPS_wich | I travelled down from Lancaster with a mate I was doing a postgrad with who was a Blades fan. I made the mistake of wearing my town top as we walked back to my car and was briefly set upon by 3-4 Sheffield fans. Thankfully my mate was wearing a Sheff U top and managed to persuade them to leave me be. Had a few bruises on the shins from being kicked but thankfully no punches were thrown. Was not a fun experience. My mates said a few seconds later … ‘for f*** sake will you zip up your hoodie!!

I was at both legs and yes when Gudmundson netted I thought that was it. So deflating afterwards, I really hoped we would sign him but hey ho. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yep, each season from 96/97 onwards. I think for 2.5 years of that time, from late 1997, we were an excellent team but that year-on-year growth set us up nicely for when we did get promoted.

In 1998 we were good and playing some nice stuff. David Johnson, Scowie and the emergence of Dyer, I can’t remember if Charlton were better but that was a disappointing playoffs. Probably a really strong division that year. Who did Bolton lose to in 1999 at Wembley?

Watford. Getting rid of the away goals rule in the playoffs was a smart move. Going out to Bolton like that was crazy.

We'd beaten Charlton three times that season (including League Cup) so was a bit galling to lose to them in the Play-offs. It was also the most anti-climatic tie in terms of drama of the three. I often wonder what would have happened if Jim hadn't have equalised at PR v Bolton. 2000-01 in the First Division would've been a tough one to take and that feeling of 'this just isn't going to happen' would've been a huge burden.

Seconds away from 4 heartbreakers in a row, hard to recover from that, especially when you consider two final day second place drama daggers as well. That said, so many of those players took us to 5th in the PL (which as we know from this season was a very different era) so maybe we’d have just won the league in 2000-2001!

Doubt we'd have won it. Fulham were like this seasons Burnley and Leeds on acid and Blackburn weren't far behind. Thankfully, we'll never need to know!

Still the best night ever at PR in my fandom. Wasn’t around in the 80s era. Never heard an atmosphere like it. [Post edited 11 May 14:39]

I got through a whole pack of 20 fags that night. Sat in upper Portman/Cobbold stand for some reason. Terrifying night. No pubs open afterwards either which was a pain.

I remember St George’s bar on the roundabout being well and truly open and there was a mob of about 300 outside. No idea if that’s still a pub now!

at 76 my memory not as good as it was but i believe charlton had a thug at full back called mills. the ref let him get away with murder ,stomping all our forwards at one time.

I went in the wrong direction then. I headed for Plough, Cock and Pye, McGintys and the like. In the end, I gave up and went home which the Friday morning at work version of me, appreciated. That pub is long gone now, though the building remains.

If you mean the one at the top of Civic Drive, which was opposite Blockbuster Video, that was empty (as the shell of the pub) for many years but I think it's flats now.

Possibly! I remember it being a Clapham OG with Bright being all over him but that’s about it. Atmosphere went from rocking to very flat that day. Don’t think the away game was much different, we didn’t have many tickets down there either.

Yeah, it was George’s bar and then the Victoria (I think), I’m sure many others are long shut that I remember on the outskirts as well.
