Your Top 3, plausible, signings for this Summer 11:09 - May 12 with 7581 viewsLen_Brennan

It's going to be tricky window, as this season has shown the gap between Premier League & Championship level players. We have to work on the basis that we will be pushing to go straight back up & try to sign players that will be capable of stepping up with us.
If we found it difficult to get PL level players to join us last summer, it should be even harder now that we have gone back down. The foreign markets are a must, but who do you think we might have a reasonable chance of bringing in from the domestic market?
Our 3 main areas to look at are centre forward (x2), centre midfield (x2), and probably right back.
I have liked the look of Ivanovic at Millwall any time I saw him, he's young, has undoubted quality & will only get better.
Wouter Burger from Stoke would be a decent shout for our midfield & looks like he wants to get out. He has played at a high level in Europe before, so may well be suited to a PL style.
If Sheffield United don't go up, & if they are under pressure to reduce their budget further, de Souza Costa is a smashing player, but who will undoubtedly have interest from the PL.
As for right back, Jimmy Dunne at QPR made the Championship team of the year, despite being in a poor side; maybe a relatively affordable option to test out during the year?

We need at least 10 bodies and maybe more depending on who goes out.

10?! I hope we won't need that many. 2 CMs and 1-2 strikers. The rest will depend on who else goes but can't imagine a huge exodus. Think Clarke returns as the back up RB. Really hope we manage to persuade Tuanzebe and if so I don't think we need to sign any other defenders even if Burgess goes. O'Shea/Woolf & Greaves/Baggott would be good. Baggott needs a pathway. Davis obviously would need replacing but think he stays. Omari is then the only other question mark.

Poll: Who do we think McKenna (not you) will partner Greaves with ?

And finally Wout Burger 🍔

I asked ChatGPT about Wout Burger and…

Yes, Ipswich Town have agreed to sign Wouter Burger from Stoke City this summer. The Dutch midfielder is set to join the club on a five-year contract for a reported fee of €14.5 million. This move marks Ipswich’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

Burger has been a key figure for Stoke City since his arrival from FC Basel in August 2023, making 77 appearances and scoring five goals. His performances have attracted attention from several clubs across Europe.

Ipswich Town, having been relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2024–25 season, are looking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming Championship campaign. The acquisition of Burger is seen as a significant step in bolstering their midfield options.

The transfer is pending final confirmation, but all indications suggest that Wouter Burger will be part of Ipswich Town’s squad for the 2025–26 season.

So there we have it. Until when pressed it said

As of now, there is no confirmed agreement for Wouter Burger to join Ipswich Town this summer. The earlier information suggesting a finalized transfer appears to be inaccurate.

Burger remains under contract with Stoke City until June 2027 . While there has been interest from clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and FC Midtjylland, no deal has been finalized, and Stoke City have previously turned down offers for him .

Therefore, unless there are new developments, it is unlikely that Ipswich Town will sign Wouter Burger this summer.

We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here. Clubs have been buying from abroad for decades.

Didn't we buy a couple of half decent ones around 80,

I don't think it will be quite as dramatic as that but time will tell

I fully expect us to invest quite aggressively again

Jimmy Dunne is a good shout if Axel goes. Strong and athletic full back / centre back. I’ve seen him at QPR a few times this season and he’s way too good for them. He’s out of contract as well. Sheff Utd were in for him in January so presumably they’ll be in the mix in the summer, although if they go up they may set their sights a little higher.

RB, CDM, ST seem the most likely positions straight out the gate in the summer.

RB - Japhet Tanganga, Jimmy Dunne, Timothy Fosu-Mensah
CDM - Shea Charles, Tommy Doyle, Flynn Downes, John Buckley, Tom KrauĂź, Steven Alzate, Tyler Morton
ST - Josh Maja, Haji Wright, Wilson Isidor, Delano Burgzorg, Divin Mubama, Evan Ferguson, Sam Surridge, Emil Riis

Beyond that it’s difficult to know where we are going to need as there are so many parts that need to start moving first, in terms of contracts and transfers out.

- Omari, Delap, O’Shea, Davis all possible exits
- Ogbene, Muric - do they have futures here?
- Broadhead, Szmodics, Philogene, J.Clarke - there’s 4 operators from the left, it’s unbalanced - need to move 1 or 2 on from that group of 4.

Re our 4 LW's, think it's more than plausible that all 4 stay until at least Jan.

Both Ogbene/ Burns will likely not be fit to play big minutes to start the season so Philogene will have to cover that side initially. Equally, I think there is every chance Szmodics may well move over to assume the right sided 10 position in a more possession based team and certainly if Omari moves on.

Broady might head off in search of a weekly starting spot but I'd be amazed if any of the other three were off after one season.

I wonder if Nicolas Raskin at Rangers could be coached rapidly into a Championship player ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Raskin

He was impressive in the latest Old Firm game at Ibrox, at 24 he looks the right age for a McKenna / Ashton signing but he is not yet halfway through a four and a half year contract so would command a fee - but not as much as some of the other suggestions so far.

I think we need:

1xST (battling Hirst to start, with Al-Hamadi third choice)
2xCM (ideally both for the starting 11 but battling Morsy for those spots)
1xRW (possibly on loan, wouldn't mind someone like Jackson as something of a backup in case Burns and Ogbene struggle for fitness)

plus replacements for O'Shea, Burgess, Tuanzebe, Davis and Hutchinson if they are to leave.

Ideally, I think our squad is:

2 GKs: one will leave out of Muric, Walton, Palmer. I would guess that is Walton.
4 CBs: Woolfenden and Greaves, ideally Burgess and O'Shea but 2 new players if not.
3 RBs: Johnson, Clarke and ideally Tuanzebe but a new signing if not. Johnson may even be able to be the starting right-back if Tuanzebe leaves.
2 LBs: Townsend as backup, Davis to start, new signing if Davis leaves.
5 CMs: Morsy and two new players battling to start, Taylor fourth choice, Humphreys fifth choice. I would prefer Luongo over Taylor but I don't think that will happen.
3 RWs: Burns or Ogbene ideal starters but someone new as a backup due to their injuries.
3 CAMs: Chaplin, Szmodics and Hutchinson. If Hutchinson leaves, maybe the new signing could be someone who can play CAM or RW.
3 LWs: Clarke, Philogene and Broadhead. I fear that Broadhead might be sold and a replacement signed, but I hope not. I would expect Harness to be released.
3 STs: Hirst and a new player battling to start, Al-Hamadi as third choice. No chance Delap stays.

That is a 28-man squad, if anything too large.

Parachute payments, £30m for Delap, £xxx amount for other players… and you are happy with AAH as the third choice striker?

You want a 3rd choice that will really push the 2nd choice, and some if called upon will offer something. He isn’t that player. I get it’s a romantic story, but ffs, just no

Plus with the way we play the first striker nearly always comes off with 20 mins to go so we can’t afford a major drop off when the replacement comes on and it’s inevitable injuries will happen. Ali is too big a drop off.

Too much is made of this “will they be able to integrate properly” thing. Snacks of Little England attitude. As if football’s not a universal language and players haven’t been moving between countries and continents for decades. What is it, exactly, that makes integration at Portman Road such an obstacle?

25 years ago we nipped into Holland and got Reuser to help us get promoted. Time for more of that.

For every Reuser, there is a Matteo Sereni.

Given we were happy to let Ali go on a perm in January, I don't see a scenario where he is in the squad next season.

He scored quite a few last season, and this season for Stoke. And he looked like he offered something different to Moore. He’s not good enough for the Premier League but very much fine at Championship level for a third choice striker. I think most of that money needs to be spent on the central midfielders, and the other striker, and then on replacements for Tuanzebe and Burgess if they are needed. Upgrading Al-Hamadi would be well down the priority list.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

It'll comfortably be 8-10 in. That's just the way it is these days. We have 4 loan players that need replacing for a start. Delap will be off. Expect at least one other will be sold if the deal is right too. Luongo will be off. At least one of Burgess and Tuanzebe too I would imagine.

There is no chance we go into next season with Baggott as our back up LCB. Barely played at Blackpool this season.

As with every window under GC2020, we will be working right up until the deadline trying to upgrade the squad. It might mean a couple of old L1 favourites leave.

I dunno, it was only 6 in Summer 2023 and ordinarily you would expect a promoted team to be keener to turnover players than a relegated one.

He got taps ins in games that were already won.
Of course they count, but let’s not over egg it.

As I said, we need the 2nd/3rd choice to be very similar in terms of quality, to push each other. We are little old Ipswich from L1 now… we will be in the top 2/3 massive champ clubs. AAH isn’t good enough for that
