Anyone ever been to Schalke/Gelsenkirchen? 21:22 - May 12 with 753 viewsZx1988

I'm off there for a concert at the start of September, and will have about three days (two full, two halves) to fill around the concert.

Has anyone been to Gelsenkirchen or the Ruhrgebiet area, and can recommend any interesting sights/attractions?

Stay in Cologne or Dusseldorf would be my advice.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

There is nothing in Gelsenkirchen and I’d also plan for a quite hefty wait away from the concert if it’s at the Schalke ground.

Went to England v Portugal there in 2006. Not sure I'd ever go back. Stay in Düsseldorf

I've booked an Airbnb by Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof, as I'm not too familiar with the area, so don't feel too confident in the transport options between the Ruhr cities late on a Saturday night.

Or is the whole area well-connected, so that I could get back to Düsseldorf easily, no natter how long it takes to get away from the stadium?

I stayed there for a few days ahead of England Portugal in 2006, luckily we had a big camp site with bits to do there - i.e. BBQs, beer, and kicking a ball about as there was next to nothing to do in Gelsenkirchen itself.

Stadium a pig to get to too

I was in St Pauli yesterday. A really interesting area. Makes Aston Villa look highly attractive.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

be careful leaving the venue, it was a nightmare getting away from the ground at the euros. i know some people were waiting 3 or 4 hours, due to the trains back into gelsenkirchen central

I would plan to be elsewhere for most of your trip, as all are saying Gelsenkirchen has nothing to offer. Really nothing interesting about the place, not sure why the Euros had it as a venue last year.
Plenty of public transport; l would stay elsewhere. Cologne is a great city.

Even getting back to the station was a pain - infrequent and crowded trams. We heard it was going to be a pain so stopped behind in the ground for a beer after for around 90 minutes and it was still chaos when we left and so decided to walk (which wasn't particularly pleasant either as alongside a main road and dark). Once at the station getting to anywhere around there was easy enough (and train services do run late during the night, although during the Euros the trains were also rubbish!).

Hopefully my experience was an extreme one and you have a better time.

I've never been, unlike many commenting on this thread, but there is the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site just one train stop from Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof.

If you're into your industrial heritage, it could be worth a look.

Nearby Wuppertal has its overhead suspended monorail. I have been on that, a long time ago, and it was quite fun.

Those seem to have developed into my plans, as it happens!

Saturday in the area, Zeche Zollverein. Trip to Wuppertal on Sunday. Job done!
