I was wondering what our resident experts particularly SB think about this? Are the trumpmeisters right to bin it? Are vaccines a greater risk? Should we let nature take its course even if that means abandoning research into MRNA and therapeutics having potential positive effect on treating cancer?

The Covid variant called Omicron has been confirmed in US, Australia, Thailand and is the most dominant variant in China and Hong Kong.
It's in Northern Ireland and the UK too.
However there's a new variant called Nimbus which is more easily transmissable. This is spreading in the US, and what's left of the CDC hasn't even issued a health warning yet. |  |

Equally ignorant from the science perspective, but I am aware they are supposed to be transformational. They’re at the cutting edge of vaccine research and application. They’re Gamechanger/McKenna compared to old style vaccines’ Evans/Lambert.
They’re supposed to be more effective, safer (no irony lost there regarding the anti-vax stance), more adaptable, more scalable and cheaper to produce.
Given Trump is all about what he can get for himself, I’m surprised he’s entertaining crackpots like JFK Jnr. There will be a shed load of money to be made from people investing in this research and roll out of the technology. Especially he has no principles and is happy to be corrupt, Trump could make a killing off pharmaceutical companies given his influence. |  |

On an unscientific sample of one, my daughter who is immune suppressed was in an office where a member of had covid but did not know it. She had a covid vaccine in October, no-one else had it. It certainly works, and glad to hear she avoided it despite being vulnerable. I’ve only had it the once post-vaccine (and I only had those 2 vaccines through the first 12/18 months). It’s incredibly unpleasant still. I would have needed to be off work for maybe 2 weeks and then pretty useless for another 1-2 weeks. I’m surprised we’ve abandoned all attempt at limiting it. Even time off work for those with it would have a big benefit. | |

I'm not a scientist but to me it's complete and utter madness especially given the fact that the mRNA Covid vaccines turned out to be the most effective, and led to the more traditional Oxford vaccine being phased out in this country.
And I took the Covid and flu vaccines when offered to me last September and managed to get through Autumn, Winter and Spring with nothing more than a single, very mild cold, when there seemed to be all sorts of nasty things going about. [Post edited 14 Jun 21:02]

I'm not a scientist but to me it's complete and utter madness especially given the fact that the mRNA Covid vaccines turned out to be the most effective, and led to the more traditional Oxford vaccine being phased out in this country.

It's an awful outcome and one which will likely cost many lives. RFK seems to honestly believe that mRNA vaccines cause more deaths than they prevent which is a provable falsehood.
I guess we shouldn't be surprised, he still thinks Andrew Wakefield was correct about MMR even though it's been thoroughly disproven and he's been struck off. This is the issue with having someone who fundamentally doesn't understand the research in a position of power.

- Bird flu is spreading rapidly across the globe (especially in the US) and is a very real contender for any future pandemic. It's currently infecting dairy cows in the US.
- The cancellation seems to be based on a narrative around mRNA vaccines rather than actual robust scientific evidence which is a real shame as mRNA vaccines have massive potential. Making decisions based on narrative could be a real problem for everyone down the line.

This would be a massive breakthrough and might make it possible to treat a much larger number of the 40m people worldwide with HIV.

More nonsense from RFK Jr by StokieBlue 28 May 22:20It seems that now he's looking to ban government scientists from publishing in international journals such as The Lancet and Jama. He's claiming they are corrupt which is another way of saying they don't tend to support his views.
Instead of publishing in well respected journals that have been around for over 200 years he is aiming to start some government-run journals where they will be able to publish (assuming he agrees with what they are saying I presume).
