What is going on with the weather then? 20:17 - Jun 30 with 6872 viewsDubtractor

Multiple days with the temperature over 30 degrees in June.

Barely any rain in 3 months - all the streams near me are bone dry.

This isn't normal at all!

My lawn has been mostly dead for weeks now, the veg patch only surviving as I'm watering it 2 or 3 times a week.

I can only assume farmers are having real concerns about the crops they are going to get this year too.

As far as I can see there has been minimal (if any) coverage of how weird the weather has been.

Anyone else bothered by this sort of thing?

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Absolutely. Far too many of us cling on to the self-serving, self-deluding "I couldn't do anything about it" internal dialogue, when actually we are the only entities who could have done something about it. We still could to some extent, but will we ever take responsibility, or will we just leave it to our kids to suffer with?

Nevertheless, many many people in the UK have made strenuous efforts to cut their carbon footprints - changing to less damaging cars, sticking to manufacturers & retailers who use non-plastic, recyclable packaging, cutting down if not eliminating completely meat consumption and flights.

Yet Trump doubles down on climate denial, supports more fossil-fuel mining, and India (understandably) just carries on wanting to catch up with the west. Not to mention some UK local authorities & councils continuing to export their residents' waste to their continent for disposal.

It's understasndable that people here feel their efforts are hopeless crumbs against that weight of power & influence.

I always feel that using the actions of India and China to justify inaction on our part always feels disingenuous - often the comparison is done on a total emissions rather than per capita emissions basis, and ignores all the emissions that have been outsourced to these countries from western countries.

And that's even before mentioning the benefit that western countries had from significant emissions during the stage of economic development these countries are now at.

The US, UK and EU need to be industrial and governmental leaders in decarbonisation, and there continues to need to be difficult conversations around ensuring a just transition where costs are imposed on the wealthiest in society rather than the poorest.

It’s obvious that I agree with all of that as I said very similar; the point I was trying to make was in reply to NQld, ie that you can’t blame UK citizens for feeling powerless and depressed that the best efforts of many of them have so little impact.

Yet those of us over 60 will remember childhoods of hot and dry summers and big snow in the winter. But maybe it’s just selective memories, given that the stats show that the hottest days on record are all in the last few years. This and now I come to think of it I also remember days when the test matches on the old B&W TV often had a picture of a girl and a teddy on it with music playing because rain had stopped play. Memories!

With the exception of 1976, hot summers were rather thin on the ground when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. Indeed, you were lucky if you got one relatively decent week during a two week summer holiday. But certainly there was much more snow.

I don't have the statistics to hand to prove it, but I'm 100% sure we had much colder winters in the 80s and 90s, with more frost and snow. The last proper snow we've had in Suffolk was the beast from the east in 2018, which was a bit of a freak event, and I seem to recall we'd not had much for a while before that.

Edit: if you select average minimum winter temperature on the selection for trends on here, it again tells a fairly compelling tale.

Important to remember we were much younger then and didn't feel the cold so much, also ran around a lot which warmed us through too.

Anyone who spends time in the hills knows that winters have become much milder. Ice climbing used to be guaranteed every year, but it’s very inconsistent now and some of the old reliable southern routes in Wales and the Lakes rarely form these days.

Nobody should vote Reform after reading rubbish like this:

Richard Tice, its energy spokesperson, told the Guardian: “Scientists do not all have a consensus on this. Some view things slightly differently … Do I think that [the carbon dioxide that humans are putting into the atmosphere] will definitely change the climate? No. There is no evidence that it is.”

Unfortunately many agree and many will vote for them.

Certainly some are making strenuous efforts as you say, but many are making token gestures only and many more are doing nothing or getting worse.

The 'less damaging cars' thing - I'm lucky that I can do most of my travel using my own legs for power on a bike, or in a three cylinder fuel efficient little car when necessary. I know many can't and some need off-road capability due to location or job.

BUT, in the last ten years or so, against all the science, against all the warnings, against the future of their pampered kids, I have seen massive numbers of new, heavy, spotless (never used off road) 4WDs replacing smaller cars around my way - so no, I don't think we're changing to less damaging cars, or at least vast chunks of the population around South Suffolk haven't got the message yet.

The powerless and depressed bit is understandable, but we have to keep having the dialogue, externally and internally, while there's some chance of mitigation.

Scientists do have a consensus on this, it's called spectroscopy. It is tried and tested method that off the cuff loons like Tice would never have the capability of understanding. The scientists who take a contrarian position are sold out to some economic think-tank like the Heritage Foundation or Cato Institute.

Indeed.

Unfortunately the actual science and facts are easily ignored nowadays if you've got a catchy soundbite and promise to save a certain section of the electorate money.

You can demonstrate that carbon dioxide causes warming at home using some bottles, vinegar, and bicarbonate of soda.

I can't believe we're going back to "nuh-uh" on this. I thought we'd moved on from that stupid argument to at least acknowledging it exists, even if their "do nothing" solution was crazy.
