In a nutshell. Technically a very good player. Seriously poor defensively even at EFL level.
Hopefully we’ll be able to get Townsend in our team, great professional, good athlete, and very good positionally.
I wonder if we might try him left side of the double pivot.., such a specialist job, and not sure what he’s like on the half turn, but we need to find a way to get him in the side.
We don’t have many players better positionally and defensively. Leeds sold Leif because he can’t defend. I doubt they’ve seen much to change that.
Wouldn’t entirely rule out other sides though…, as a wing back he has incredible attributes. | | | |

Leif absolutely DESTROYED the Championship last time around. He would be fine in the Prem in a stronger side imo. |  | | |

Technically the best season for attacking returns by any fullback .., ever, beating Trippiers record for assists wasn’t it?
Wonderful engine too, and how he stays fit for 50 odd games when he puts such a shift in, might be as good as I’ve seen for us, he’s supremely fit. A fantastic pro too.
Amazing though. Because none of that means he can defend. He couldn’t defend in League One, or the championship, he gets wrong side, clumsy tackles, and only Harry Clarke is worse positionally.
Also true. Townsend said he was great first half of the season, well, in the first game he got wrong side of Salah, second game he gave a pen away.., I know players need to be kind to each other, but defensively he was poor all season.., these are areas that are basic, even in the EFL.
Doesn’t change the fact he’s one of the best athletes and attacking fullbacks in the EFL, and we are an EFL club now.
Let’s not fall in to the trap of not being able to process more than one idea at a time, and being reductive.
He’s not a terrible player, he is a poor defender, he’s also an unbelievable asset going forward.
Maybe his defensive side will improve, or maybe he’d suit a different system.
He clearly can do a 4 in the EFL, if we’re winning, and he’s flying and getting forwards, everyone forgets his mistakes (there were lots 23/24 too).
McKenna has coached him for three years.
My view is he’d be brilliant in a five with a mobile left sided centre half - not many teams play that way though.
Forest do a fair bit - and he was linked with them, that would make some sense.
Can’t see anyone in a 4 thinking his inability to defend will be anything but a huge problem in the Prem.
There aren’t many sides in the prem that dominate possession enough for Leifs forward attributes to outweigh the defensive stuff.
Maybe he’s one of those who weirdly would shine in a top side - like Trent.
