Because we’re not allowed to worry… 11:36 - Jul 7 with 9355 viewsSitfcB

…when should we start worrying about no new signings?

Off to Austria next week, surely we should have one or two in by then at least.

Season starts in 32 days and we’re now 7 days into the ‘new financial year’ which some were using as an excuse.

I have it in my diary to commence being concerned from Wednesday 2pm onwards, with worry scheduled for Friday at 11, if we've not got two "starters" in.

I'll keep you updated.

I'd like to see 6 in I think in total, a balance of quality and some experience.

I should’ve added ‘not allowed to moan’ about lack of signings either.

No need for anybody to moan to be honest. We already have the best squad in the Championship and there will be far less signings than people think. 2 midfielders, a striker, maybe 2 if Al Alhamadi goes on loan and maybe a Centre half but that will be about it. People need to calm down

Not worrying.

Actually feel like our current squad need to have some time together getting back into a groove and becoming more confident with a shape/format/roles after the battering we took last year. Definitely want a new striker and midfielder (or two) but don’t want to see multiple/big changes for a long time.

You can worry all you want but it won’t achieve anything as you have no say in making things better.

The only thing which I’ll say is that signing better players takes longer as they obviously have more clubs after them or their clubs are playing hardball. If we were signing L1 players, those deals would be far easier to get over the line.

Totally agree. This ‘squad’ still needs quite a bit of working doing to it.

Still, if Ashton says jump, we’re all meant to say ‘how high?’.

My god there's some bo11ocks written on here, and you've just won today's award.

It would be good to get a couple in before Austria and you'd have to think that is the plan. Other teams in the division are strengthening very well and I think we are in for a bumpier ride than some expect.

How many players other teams have signed would you genuinely say we would have liked here?

I feel we are now in the usual angsty position (happens every season!) of thinking every signing for a team not called Ipswich is some world beater we missed out on.

Can only think the lad Doyle from Wolves who has gone to Brum would have been useful here, but i'm not that impressed with them dropping £10m on a 30 years old who scored 0 from 6 apps for Rennes last year.

We shouldn't be complacent, and the Champ is always a tough grind but some are seriously underestimating the talent in our squad because of the experience last year imo.

I think like many issues on here it's become a bit binary but there's a mid-point for me. I'd like some upgrades in as soon as possible but can understand why that might take longer - if we're targeting players who we think will be able to step up to the Prem then there's likely to be additional interest and/or the player will be seeing what other options there are.

At this stage I'd still rather we took our time and got someone who was an 8 or 9 out of 10 for what we want (ability, potential, team fit, sell-on value, etc) than go for an easy to get 6 or 7 out of 10 now. There probably does come a point where we just need to make things happen fast but I don't think we've reached that yet.

If there were more rumours floating around I think there'd be less worry in general as people could see the sorts of targets we're aiming at.

But then again, watch us sign a player without any rumours, and the same people will proclaim how brilliant Ashton is for operating so well under the radar.

Agree, I don't think this squad will take us up this year as I stands,
Midfield will be ageing and non existent,
Catch 22 wait we may get better craftsmen,
Don't wait we may fall a little short in craftsmen,
Either wait to long and I can't see us coming flying out of the blocks and with our start we could be playing a long catch up,
I've watched town 50 years and I've never considered us to be very good at chasing teams down in general,

If the season started tomorrow:

Palmer
Walton
Muric

Johnson
Clarke
O'Shea
Woolfenden
Greaves
Baggott
Davis
Townsend

Morsy
Taylor
Humphreys

Burns
Ogbene
Hutchinson
Chaplin
Szmodics
Clarke
Broadhead
Philogene

Hirst
Al-Hamadi

I would expect at least 20+ teams in this division would happily be in our position without panicking.

Because we’re not allowed to worry… on 12:34 - Jul 7 with 903 viewsJeremiahBrown

I am concerned that we may be waiting for certain people and then end up not getting them. I have already seen some who were on our shortlist, been snapped up by other clubs. I am just concerned that we shall end up with nobody or 2nd or 3rd best, if that. We need to be getting the best if want to be promoted.

Because we’re not allowed to worry… on 11:56 - Jul 7 by Steve_M

I think getting at least one central midfielder in soon is imperative, we either need two or three depending on McK's view on Taylor and/or Humphries.

That and a striker and I think we could feel a bit more relaxed, accepting some gaps will only get filled late in the window.

Mck's view on Taylor and humpheries should be not starters in league games,

It's a football club.. ffs its not life threatening, some people must have shallow lives to worry about football clubs buying players.

Most teams aren't going for top 2 though.

It certainly shouldn't be panic stations but the club said themselves relegation early allowed us to do early business, and that just hasn't transpired. The midfield and strike force is probably ok if you are going for 14th but not if you are going to need 90+ points.

There is a balance to be struck somewhere.

A bit dramatic Sitters! Not sure anyone has said you're not allowed to worry. More like, it's a bit unwarranted at the minute. Despite what some think on here, we're really not governed by the thought police!

I'm bored and would love the excitement of a couple of new players but I'd much rather the club took the time to secure some real quality, as opposed to just getting whats available currently, regardless of whether it's the right fit, or if it's likely to improve us.

I will start to feel a little concerned if we don't have a couple of midfielders through the door in the next couple of weeks. It would be ideal to get another striker in before the start of the season too. Other than that I'm pretty content with the squad, dependent on no outgoings, of course!

We have this from some people every season. Every transfer window even.

Yes, bringing players in early might be ideal. But I would rather bring in the right player on the wrong date, than the wrong player on the right date.

We have done the Delap deal early. Regardless of how much of that sum is available to spend, it was a deal which has a huge impact on our finances, both for PSR purposes, and real cash flow/balance sheet purposes. So transfer business has started early, and we know more of the parameters within which we'll be working than we did.

Of course, there comes a time when it becomes concerning if we are behind the curve, especially if we were to lose a key player (Hutch?) very late in the day. But I suspect we have little control over that.

Furthermore, we simply don't know how far advanced any overtures are, in either direction. It is madness to allow our sentiment to be seriously affected by unevidenced rumours. But it is even more ridiculous to allow our sentiment to be seriously affected by the perceived lack of unevidenced rumours. Remember, and this is often overlooked, that we only get a small piece of the true picture, we don't know how much of the picture we are getting, and the part that we do get is often random (which agent has the loosest lips, which staff member overhears which conversation, which target happens to have a release clause, etc).

If we get promotion, I don't suppose anyone will be caveating their celebrations with a pang of irritation that any wonderful new transfers were signed in late July rather than early July. And I'm yet to see any data showing that earlyish signings are markedly better than late-ish ones.

Even once the window is over, we won't know how successful our window has been. Most fans were happy with last summer's window, even before we knew that Delap would turn out to be anywhere near as good as he did turn out to be. But in retrospect, it turns out that that window wasn't such great shakes, across the board, in terms of what we needed in the Prem. Even now, we maybe don't know what kind of assets (or liabilities) some of those players will be - Greaves, JClarke, Ogbene, Muric? if we can't conclusively judge a window that finished almost a year ago, it's madness to start judging a window that is still very wide open.

Asking when you're allowed to worry suggests you're already worrying. There's presently no reason to worry. That is all that matters.
