Liverpool to pay out Jota contract 18:24 - Jul 8 with 4405 viewsUSA

“Following the tragic passing of their beloved #20, Diogo Jota, the club has committed to continue paying his £140,000 per week salary for the remaining three years of his contract. That’s a total of £21.84 million, to be paid in scheduled instalments directly to his wife and three children.

To Liverpool, a global football powerhouse, this may seem a small gesture in financial terms. But to Diogo Jota’s family, it’s life-changing offering long-term security and stability after an unimaginable loss.

Even more moving, the club has pledged to establish a special dedicated fund to support Jota’s children for life.”

Great that Liverpool commit to paying out the contract but is the £21m not enough to ensure the children’s future? Why do they need a separate fund??

Let's just all accept that, for once, a business/ organisation is doing the right thing.

....indeed, that doesn't detract from the fact they are still paying it when they don't 'have' to.

Well done them.

Suspected they would do this. Good to see.

All companies have insurance that covers death in service. Liverpool, I'm sure also have insurance to cover Jota's value which will allow them to buy a replacement.

I wouldn't have expected anything less of them. Scousers have been absolutely hammered by the press and popular culture in this country for decades, but I've always found them to be welcoming and genuine. The club has always mirrored those traits imo.

Not for this they won’t. They won’t be insured to pay the rest of the wages of his contract.

I'm sure they are insured and not out of pocket as such but this is all good to hear! Found the whole Sala/Cardiff thing utterly despicable and disgusting. Still going on isn't it?!

Just as an aside the fund for the children is interesting. Fair play but those kids clearly aren't going to need the money. It's their dad that will be missing. Just wondering if some sort of charity for others in his name might have been better. But completely for Liverpool to decide. Well done Liverpool and thoughts for that family. Absolutely tragic.

They'll have upto 5 times death in service benefit and to protect themselves Keyman insurance.
It won't cost them a penny

For a fixed term contract? I’m doubtful. Anyway, that would be different to them continuing to pay his salary. Death in service is paid as a lump sum, directly to the next if kin.

They will have insurance so likely will only cost them a small excess.

Obviously it's a good gesture and they don't "have to" but imagine the outcry, probably from their own fans if they didn't.

I'd say a lot of clubs do this, most recently the Greek team that Goerge Baldock played for.

I'd imagine any club big enough to be able to afford it, would do it.

Still nice to see the club standing up and taking care of the family, without any wrangling over money. Well done Liverpool.

Each to their own. I think they are one of the worst clubs and fanbases around personally.

Indeed, I'm pretty sure Liverpools death-in-service policy is what is covering this. I'm almost certain that the bigger clubs probably offer this as part of their contracts, it's most likely another benefit they give to make the signing for them a more attractive proposition. These probably differ between clubs, much as it differs between all employers (I have 3 years pay from my employer if I die whilst employed, whereas my missus only has 1).

Comparing this with the Cardiff situation (not aimed at you Bloom blue), is comparing apples to oranges. Cardiffs stance on the whole tragic saga is nothing other than disgusting, but I believe their claim is that he wasn't actually their player at the time. At least, that was their claim originally, not sure if that stance has changed now, as I haven't seen any coverage of the situation for some time.

As mentioned previously Death in Service goes straight to the individual's family, so LFC will not benefit in any way from that, but it will provide his family with a multiple of his salary as a lump sum death benefit.
So why are LFC also paying up his contract? Dunno, but good on them if they are.
Replacing him will cost a few bob, I wonder if LFC have insurance to cover that - presumably they do the the form of Keyman Insurance.

The only exception is my wife!

Seriously though, I have a great soft spot for Liverpool and its people. It is a truly great city with a wit and friendliness that shines through every time I visit.

And for those that don't know the term Scouser comes from scouse, a type of stew typically made from chunks of meat (usually beef or lamb) with potatoes, carrots, and onion. The word "scouse" comes from lobscouse, a stew commonly eaten by sailors throughout northern Europe in the past, and surviving in different forms there today.

My wife and mother-in-law have on occasions cooked it for me.

I wasn't saying Liverpool would benefit from it. Death in service is, usually, a payment, often paid in multiples of an employees yearly salary to the employees next of kin/ named beneficiaries. Liverpool may well have insurances that cover these circumstances, but I don't know if that's a thing or not. My point is that, everyone is gushing over Liverpool paying up Jotas contract, but it's likely that this was contracted when he was signed. Good on them for having this policy, if true, but I suspect they have to offer it, as most other big clubs probably do too.

Lots of posts on this but as far as I can see the only reporting of this is a Portuguese newspaper which a few websites have then regurgitated, so is it even true? Doesn’t seem to have been reported anywhere notable here

If it is true though, it is almost certainly linked to either a contractual obligation or insurances as others have said, and just being spun in a way to make the club look wonderful. Multi-million pound businesses don’t tend to just make eight figure ex-gratia payments, regardless of how tragic the circumstances are

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010
