Not really - most of us accept it's a possibility, just not that it's a 100% cert. So if he does go, sorry but you don't get "told you so" bragging rights.

Assuming Hutch goes (and he clearly will) on 11:01 - Jul 10 by HighgateBlue | Yes, this was a very worrying thing to read. If it's the real intention, then I wonder who will be sold in order to make this figure? Delap, Davis, Hutch, Muric, presumably? If it's not the real intention, then why on earth write something like that? It's in unambiguous terms, and it makes you wonder about some of those involved in running the club. Anyone who has any power over the generation of £100m should be more careful or more able to use language accurately. It's not great that the club is having to deny that it's for sale. Whether the squad is for sale remains to be seen. It would be nice to have a clarificatory statement from Brett Johnson, to be honest. |
Davis possibly - but the front runners looked like Bournemouth and Leeds losing LB (Kerkez & Firpo), but both have gone to the international market instead, and bought in good LB options at seemingly good prices. Truffert - £11m to Bournemouth Gudmundsson - £9.5m to Leeds Maybe if we took a hit on J.Clarke or J.Philogene we recoup towards £100m, but can't see anyway we'd get to that figure.

Assuming Hutch goes (and he clearly will) on 10:40 - Jul 10 by darkhorse28 | I think the frustration is, Omari is 100% going. Even if he didn’t want to, WE need him to (the owners). We ARE up for sale, we DID spend up to £100 million and we DID make our manager one of the best paid in Europe. We rolled the dice, it didn’t work…, pretending it’s a long term project, and we are ‘building’ doesn’t fit what actually happened. We spent an eye watering sum of money, didn’t get very good value, and got horrific outcomes . These are the consequences.., we can lose part of £20 million liabilities over the next 3 years and boom a £15 million profit or £10 million at least, and that’s 100% why he’s going. Ni it’s and no buts. Gone. And he’ll play at a higher level and want to leave for that alone, he didn’t want 50 games at this level anyway, and he does deserve better. I think the frustration is, even after the owners have laid it out.., in black and white plain English, there are still fans clinging on to the emotion and dream they invested in, for dear life. They can’t separate their ego, the club, and what they bought into from the facts and the evidence. If we’d spent £50 million, the owners wouldn’t be selling up. We spent what could still reach closer to £150 million.., on the promise that it would guarantee staying up (as much as it could) The owners got it wrong.., the bought in to Ashton specifically and that narrative, that McKenna was the real deal. Last season, he 100% wasn’t, and the financial consequences alone, when you spend more than any promoted club in history, are defining for our future. Ashton wouldn’t be here if the owners didn’t need continuity. Now he has to fix his mess.., and player sales are part of that. We can’t service the amortised liabilities if spending £100-150 million over 4 years on EFL revenue, it’s not possible. We’ll sell over £70 million worth of players and reduce those liabilities, banking profits if we can, but losses if we need to, to get those liabilities off the books. It’s a mess of our own making. Supporters still just clinging on to the clubs made up nonsense because it feels good, doesn’t help. At least with some honesty, as much as it’s not ideal, we can start to dream again!!! This time maybe we can focus on the off the field requirements at based level, and being actually best in class, not EFL level. There’s a huge amount to be positive about…, if we can get new owners who are football people, and understand what elite looks like. Omari .., be thankful we had him, an absolute joy to watch, and he’s, we had a chance with him and Delap to build something beautiful, they are THAT good. But we blew it. And you clapped every Ashton mistake too.., no finger pointing.., we needed agency, and we got mostly looking the other way to bad decision after bad decision after bad decision. It’s still true today. The size of last years failures was spectacular, it wasn’t a minor setback. We need new owners and a totally new direction now. The owners, many staff, and many players, have lost faith in our project. If that isn’t definitive (the closest people to Ashton and McKenna) I don’t know what is. |
You're forgetting 150m in venture capital was pumped in the club about 12 months ago, television money increased to around 100m (or thereabouts) and we are set to recieve 48m in parachute money over the next 2 season. We've also recouped 30m from the sale of Delap, minus Man City's cut. Huge sellable assets are on our balance sheet now, with 4-5 players worth in excess of 15m, and in some cases, much more. The club is in an outstanding position financially. Go and listen to Kieran Maguire's recent podcast on our finances. We'll most likely continue to add high 7 figure, low 8 figure player purchases this season.

You ask "Why write it?" Firstly it says "up to", which can mean anything between 0 and something north of £100M. As to the why, this letter is to potential investors, who would want to know about potential returns. The statement is to reinforce the realisable assets that the club have already built. Other language in the letter also reinforces this, and the future potential to increase player asset value. When investing in a business, you rarely look for immediate returns (day-traders exempted), but the longer term potential to grow your return. Appreciating assets will often be held onto, until the growth potential is plateauing. And they give the investor the comfort that the assets exist, to protect their investment. There are a lot of kneejerk reactions on the forum by people who really don't understand the modern day business reality of football clubs, and are reading far too much into this letter.

Why would a club being sold for a premium (reported record fee at Championship level) advertise the fact that it is asset striping to potential investors ? If it is, that's incredibly noble and honest of them. However, if you think about it, it really doesn't make sense at all. The whole email, message, memo was poorly written. I think what was meant, was that player sales 'can' be generated up to 100m. So, additional working capital 'can' be generated if necessary. Whether the club does that depends on the strategic value of the player, where they fit into McKenna's plans, clauses etc... Premium price tag, target for a 1bn market capitalisation by 2031...asset stripping. Doesn't make sense at all ! [Post edited 10 Jul 12:37]

Assuming Hutch goes (and he clearly will) on 08:47 - Jul 10 by BarcaBlue | Have you considered that footballers are just like the majority of the population who want to better themselves by earning more and working at the top level possible? Delap has far more chance of playing for England at Chelsea than he ever would in the Championship. Omari would start every game for any team outside the PL but it doesn't mean he should give up on playing there. These are confident and ambitious young men and are unlikely to be solely motivated by minutes in the Champ. |

Assuming Hutch goes (and he clearly will) on 08:49 - Jul 10 by Herbivore | I think it's 50/50. Much as Prem money is wild, £35m is still a big fee for any bar the top handful of clubs and that top handful aren't going to be interested. Will a mid level club think he's worth a punt at £35m? It's certainly possible but I don't think it's guaranteed. |

Considering most should stay, I would suggest our off season 2024/25 recruitment will be judged a lot more in 6 months and ultimately next May. Most fans had us spending 60-80M tops on here. There should be big pressure to get up automatically this year and there will be. On paper does Sunderland's recruitment look more exciting, i would say yes but let's see how they fair. Worth noting that if they come down you'd expect them to have a lot less continuity going into their next Championship campaign. If they hit, then fair play to them. Nice to see us exploring more international markets, I had been critical of that. The entire league 1 crew have nearly been replaced and that should be expected with our net spend and Parachute money, hopefully more to come.

No he’s not like for like for either, but they do like the profile of young, bit of experience, upsell potential, and they’ve started to do it well following the earlier more scattergun approach when they first went up. And they have a lot of cash all of a sudden.

True, just wonder if they'll see much value in him at £35m. It's a big old fee. I know they spent similar on Gibbs-White but he'd done well at Wolves and was a bit more proven. They got Elanga and Hudson-Odoi for very little, in terms of fees anyway. I wouldn't be completely surprised if they went for him, just not convinced he's quite the profile they'd be after at that level of fee.
