But they weren't fit, were they? Being able to play week-in, week-out, and sustaining more than 60 minutes a game, that's even MORE important in the Championship.

He’s our captain because of WHO he is as a person, not because of his football ability.
A guy like Sam Morsy doesn’t kick up a fuss or cause problems.
If he’s here, he starts versus Birmingham, no matter who we sign. After that, it’s his to lose, or up to the signings to win it.

He's nearly 34, he can't play a full championship Saturday/Tuesday season. If he does stay it would be cover and late sub. Again, him being an influential player for a few years makes this tough and not straight forward.

Perhaps his refusal to wear the rainbow armband and social media presence has also been a factor in any decision making though. The owners may feel that the captain should fully represent the inclusive community ethos / image that the club has tried hard to create.

Yeah, the armband thing left a really sour taste in my mouth, and with a lot of other town fans I know too, plus his social media activity isn’t great. In my opinion of course - I know others disagree.
Appreciate for others they can separate that from the player, but I haven’t quite felt the same about him since. Still, I completely recognise how fantastic he has been for us, and I do wish him well when he does eventually leave - but he doesn’t capture the behaviours of a captain and player that would put him in the legend category for me.
Supporting Ipswich is more to me than just results - it’s about connecting with the players and make-up of the club in a community way. [Post edited 13 Jul 13:29]

I wonder if this has been on the cards for a few weeks. Perhaps McKenna discussed the situation with Morsy with regards to building for the PL next season where he would be 35 and that he might not get much playing time.
Would also perhaps make sense that McKenna discussed with O'Shea that there could be scope for the captaincy this season and that may have influenced his decision to sign a new contract.

Anyone that is deemed to be too old and not mobile enough will be gone. It's all part of the process and we have to accept it.
From Morsy's point of view a two or three year contract is great as he won't get that at Town when his contract is up.

Too much change in this position is going to be really disruptive.
We'd do well to keep Morsy during the transitional period of changing our central midfield.
Bedding in 3 new players is going to be incredibly difficult and we need some form of continuity if we want to have a strong season. 25 appearances from Morsy would be money well spent. Or, offering him a new 2 year deal. I think he is totally worth it. | | | |
