Absolutely spot on. I think people over-egg his ‘decline’, when he was available, he played every single game for us, keeping Kalvin Phillips or Cajuste out of the side. He would have been more than capable to play for us in the Championship.

Never injured for a long period of time, there’s a reason why McKenna very rarely dropped him. The fact McKenna clearly wanted to keep him speaks volumes too.

A very risky move from the club, feels very much like a changing of the guard with the amount of senior players leaving. I guess it has to happen if we want to emulate and become a club like Brighton, Brentford or Bournemouth.

He’s no less fit than he was when we signed him, arguably fitter. Keeps himself in great shape so age isn’t really an issue for me.

Certainly question marks about where his ceiling is and I do think he’s one we’ve outgrown to be honest, but I expected him to stay as a bit of a transition season, phasing him out until a natural end next summer with his contract expiry. Departure feels a bit premature in that respect, and I can’t imagine we’ll get a big fee so felt to me there was more value in letting him leave for nothing next summer but hey ho.

Definitely adds pressure to the recruitment and an abrupt changing of the guard.

Are we getting any sort of fee? Or is it a case of letting him go as he's done well for us?

I'd like to think we're at least getting a few hundred K.

If they’re going to be offering him a massive contract, they can blinking well pay. We don’t need to move him on. We’d probably be in a better position if he saw out his contract. So yeah, thinking about it they can definitely pay.

(Although news reports reckon it will be a free transfer. Makes no sense to me - we should be trying to get something. He’s in demand).

It's in Phil's report:

"The Blues are not demanding a fee from Kuwait SC but would do should he instead join an English club."

Saw Sam yesterday, he wasn't offered new deal by the club. Gutted as although playing time may be reduced you can't buy what he brings in terms of leadership and standards both on and off the pitch

Yep, we'll need to go some to finish the window with a better #3 CM than Sam would have been. Shame we couldn't have agreed a sufficiently tempting promotion bonus to have kept him one more year.

You have to think the decision's been made that SM won't be happy with a bit-part role and he may not be the dressing room leader we all think he is when he's not the first name on the team sheet. And ultimately, why should the club offer him a new deal? We gave him a huge bumper two-year deal last summer. I struggle to understand why he's come back to the table to ask for another new deal this year. The Kuwait-type offer would still be there next summer.

On the pitch, his experience will be missed. I wonder if we'll looking to bring in an older midfielder (30+) to add to the group?

This feels like a move that could drag us right into the mix with the other sides. These new players might be better players, but the leadership and experience of knowing the league will be hugely missed.

This is also my big concern.

The combination of stability/continuation, leadership, culture of the squad and quality of player that we're slowly adding to it was our clear advantage over others.

I don't doubt that we'll look to add midfielders who have more potential and skill than him, but his sheer determination and leadership of the team will be a huge loss to us.

Poll: How would you rate our summer transfer window out of 10?
