All very quiet on potential strikers 15:37 - Jul 17 with 3682 viewsLen_Brennan

Maybe that's a good thing, as it certainly hasn't helped that news of our interest in Marcel Ruiz has leaked out, both in trying to get him & in approaching another central midfielder options.
My preference for a new centre forward would be Mikhail Ivanovic from Millwall, so as long as he's not gone to Everton, or an Italian club, I'll stay hopeful, but I'm surprised we haven't had far more links at this point, given that we probably need 2 new signings there, with Ali maybe going on loan again.

I think the midfielder stuff is all noise to be honest ... If the press are to be believed we are in negotiations with Napoli about Jens, Boro about Hackney and Toluca regarding Ruiz all of who will presumably be vying for one rule. I can't see us being after more than 1 of those.

On the striker and lack of links, I put that down to wanting PL youngsters who are currently deemed as part of the squad eg Osuala or Guiu. They will want reinforcements in before letting go of those types.

I'd love Ivanovich but can't see it. Are we really going to spend 10+M on a striker and will he want to come knowning Hirst is the first choice?

We will be agreeing deals in principle for multiple targets in the same position at the same time I am sure. Then it's a case of pulling the trigger on target A if we can and working down the list.

This May sounds controversial…. But do we think Hirst is definitely nailed on as our number one starter? Im a big fan of his, but he’s got a pretty miserable track record in (major) injuries, and we really felt it during 23/24, so I do still wonder if we will look to get someone in who is even better?

Firstly I think Ali will be sold as club have higher ambitions now and simply can't carry players who can't step up.
Regarding Ivanovic this is the type of buy required Hirst will start as first choice but lots of games and Hirst does pick up injuries.

Probably not all three but we will likely be targeting two. People seem to forget it's a squad game and we can't just have a good first 11. We need depth.

I might be in a minority, but I don't think KMcK will want to get to Sept 1st with Hirst as first choice. I think he's great, but his fitness is obviously an issue and I suspect we'll be hoping for someone with a bit of X factor as well....

I hate to mention it but until we have identified, agreed and convinced a player nothing is happening until then they have to be better than AAH and available to us at a price and wage that works. Not easy competing at the top of the champ and bottom of the PL, the talent pool in small.

I think almost certainly. That's not to say he could not be surpassed but I think he's continually shown how effectively he plays the role.

Injuries are a part of the game but I think until that happens he's the starter.

We certainly need someone to push him though.

Realistically none of those three are coming to sit on the bench. I suspect it will be someone less established who comes in to compete with Jack Taylor if we end up with 5.

I would be very very pleasantly surprised if we ended up with two of those though! Imagine having Cajuste/ Hackney to pick from.

Think if we get 40 million for Hutchinson. We will spend Big
on our midfield and a striker without needing to spend much of our parachute money leave a bit for Jan.
I read Brentford, Everton and Forest interested in Hutchinson , So I'm sure Brentford will want done fairly quickly when the get their money from Utd.

Ivanovic fits the bill perfectly. Young, knows the division, off the back of a great season, works hard, proper #9, good with both feet, good in the air, intelligent movement. He's very George Hirst like, when I saw him playing for Millwall he immediately struck me as a McKenna player.

As you say it might just depend on whether there's interest from a top division, that could be one that gets done later in the window if that interest from higher up the chain doesn't materialise.

Bearing in mind we've talked about building a PL ready team and last time round he wasn't considered good enough to be our starting striker, I wouldn't be surprised that if the right person was available then we'd go for them

I see the Amerucan target has joined Derby. I can only hope we weren't really after him, because if Derby are beating us to strikers Id say we're in trouble.

We play with one up front, but we play with two up front in the sense that Hirst and A.N.Other will share 100 minutes or so especially in the championship with so many games. I'd like to think that we'll have two quality strikers plus a backup, plus Szmodics and those first two won't really differentiate between who starts and who comes on after 60 mins or so, and that they'll swap those roles every few games anyway.

There's no credible evidence that he was ever a target - and on the evidence of other business we're doing, do you think this guy was at the level we probably want to recruit at?

It was rumoured that he didn't want to go to a Championship club and would go back to Spain. I think maybe Mckenna should have a word with him.

You wonder if the club has a little portfolio of stats and testimonies which show how much various young players have improved under McKenna, would be a good sell if you could stick data on it. Although, there have been some misses too (Scarlett)
