Even the BBC sport live reporting put up "is this the worst penalty shootout in history"
Sounds a bit like they are trying to compare the quality to the men's game. I can't make a judgment as i've not seen many women's football penalty shootouts. We actually scored 43% of our penalties, so better than the men in the euro 2020 final.

I didn’t see that, this is actually the first game I’ve seen in the tournament. It happens, certainly not a reflection of anything broader just an observation that it was as scrappy as and England IMO were 2nd best for the most part. Sweden can count themselves unlucky but as I said it’s knockout football, it’s all about results. Good on them.
Yes, the Netherlands game was excellent. You missed a corker.
The Lionesses have been very Jekyll and Hyde this tournament.

Yeah, maybe not the best first impression!
There clearly is a huge disparity between players and clubs, which is to be expected given that even the more successful teams have only recently had injections of cash. It’ll take a while to level out - as we’ve seen in the men’s game too and the smaller countries.
No doubt tonight was poor - and easy ammunition for those wanting to knock women’s football (not directed at you CB), but it’s a journey, and it’s a fun one to be on as an England fan for a change.
I’ve got a young daughter who has started taking an interest in football and kicking a ball around, so I need no convincing of the merit in girls and women playing football. I’m all for it and don’t think comparing it to men’s football is particularly useful tbh.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with calling a spade a spade though as we’re doing. If anything it’s a bit patronising (maybe not the right word) of the sport to be overly gushing and defensive when standards aren’t met.
Hopefully a better performance in the semi and the girls can book a place in the final!

I get that completely. And I think the need of putting a positive spin on everything seems to come from the media, not so much the players.
I guess there’s just excitement that they are getting representation that a lot of the pundits never had in their time.
Healthy debate is fine - it’s the jabs that aren’t needed. I don’t think anyone on here has been saying we played well tonight - people just feel the need to stick the boot in. Again not directed at you.

I wasn’t intending to compare it to men’s football particularly, don’t think that’s especially useful.
Just in its own right as a spectacle, a lot of individual errors, I thought both the Sweden goals were so cheaply given away. First half especially England struggled to string a few passes together, didn’t really build any sustained momentum or possession and didn’t ask any questions of Sweden aside from a relatively limp effort off the bar. Extra time was 1 way traffic against tired legs as well, Sweden were by far the stronger. If that’s a boxing match I’d have them well ahead on points.
No fair enough and I agree, it just read to me like you were making the comparison as just commenting on the game in of itself wouldn’t require any remark about not being a regular watcher of women’s football.
That’s football, innit, especially in tournaments. To the victor goes the spoils.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

That was a good pen to be fair.
Although the second Swedish one was better.
Englands 5th was good too. A lot of pressure, miss that and we were out. Wasn’t convinced by the run up, looked like a rearing horse but dispatched it away confidently in the top corner.
I felt sorry for the girl who missed Sweden’s final penalty, she was young as well.

Rachel Brown-Finnis was on co-comms, and she really overdoes the praise.

Agree with this. I posted an unhelpful post earlier just because of the praise from the commentators and people bigging up the play in the tournament. I have watched some and really struggle with it but can see why some people enjoy watching it. The amount of mistakes just annoys me.

What ever happened to running as fast as you can and sticking your boot through the blooming thing?
When has anyone run as fast as they can before taking a penalty? The Swedish keeper seemed to stick her boot through it too and probably why the ball travelled so far.

I don’t understand the need for people to put down something that others enjoy.
Genuine question, does this happen in other sports? Are male tennis fans like this, or male hockey fans?
It seems to be deep-rooted (whether intentional or not) in feeling that football is a male sport only, and gatekeeping it. It’s super sad - just let people enjoy what they enjoy. If you don’t - that’s cool. I don’t like rugby or cricket. I don’t jump on those threads.

Agree 100% with this. It happens with depressing predictability and I don't get it. When these people (i.e. men) watch a men's match, do we get endless comments comparing it to the women's game? No, we do not. So why do we get them the other way round?

The defending for the second Swedish goal was unbelievable. Jess Carter makes Darren Currie look like Usain Bolt, but the decision of Leah Williamson to run away from the attacker with the ball is literally school standard.
I want to be positive about it, the women deserve an opportunity to showcase their talent, but the level at the minute is very poor. I'm genuinely glad people can watch it and enjoy what they're watching because it feels a lot like its getting overhyped in the media for what the level is.

The game has come on in a long way. I don't think any of us in here can run round for 2 hrs 😂. There will always be a huge gulf between women's and men football

I don’t watch much women’s football so not sure if tonight was typical or an outlier but the standard was poor throughout. Maybe nerves and the occasion playing a part, but looked like 2 really poor sides. Sweden will feel unlucky, they were less sh1t than England on balance.
Still, knockout football, I don’t suppose the England girls will care too much. Good on them.
Me neither although last night daughters friend was round and is into it. They/we actually watched a film but once it finished we turned over to watch last ten minutes and the penalties, although daughters friend couldn’t watch them bless her and went home. I might laugh at the pens but the standard of the game and those is immaterial, if you enjoy it what’s the issue. I sat there though with absolutely no investment in or interest in the outcome, which I can’t invent out of nothing.

That's odd. In another post you said the referee had an excellent game, did you mean she had an excellent 10 minutes or did you watch all the match with absolutely no interest in the game and then come on here to tell everyone you don't care for women's football?

Or... just don't watch it
No comparison between men's and women's football England ladies would not beat a very good Sunday men's team. It has to be taken for what it is People have to stop being upset or offended by comments I was taught sticks and stones to many snow flakes today I'm afraid.

Nothing is weirder than men who are determined to tell you how much they dislike womens football at every given opportunity.
If it is that bad, if you dislike it that much nobody is forcing you to watch it let alone come on a football forum and comment about it. It is very very odd behaviour.
