Penalty Shootouts 08:15 - Jul 18 with 1502 viewsWhens_Lunch

Watched last nights effort with my son and was told off for laughing.
It was a shocker, like watching a mediocre U13 game down the park.

The last shootout we watched together was the cup defeat to Forest.
From what i recall 9/10 were bangers.

The discussion afterwards was how can there be such a difference in standard.
I was at a loss. Help

Dreadful isn't it, an insult to the game, why do the FA persist in allowing this appalling spectacle to occur? My blubber was quivering with indignation at the way in which my sport has been degraded by this. It's time someone did something about it. There's certainly enough people posting snide putdowns to indicate a real feeling that something must be done about this wokery.

You seen the Luton/Ipswich penalty shootout I take it, and have watched a large selection of women’s football to make a fair, balanced judgement?

Oh and in answer to your question, it’s been done to death. Only a recent injection of finances, training facilities, professional contracts etc. But you’d know this if you read some of good discussions about it rather than coming in with the digs.

You can apply that line to many non-league clubs. I'm not sure how relevant any of it is to taking penalties though? There was some decent football throughout the 90 minutes, (extra time was a non-event, same in the means game), but lets face it, the penalty taking was laughable.

The Forest game was a particularly fine set of penalties.

Last night, England seemed to have a plan, to which Falk had all the answers. Facing a lesser player in goal, not correctly picking which way to dive, those dinks into the bottom corner might have been hailed "clever" and "cool-headed". Tension and pressure (having thrown away a two goal lead) - plus a couple of good saves - did for the Swedes.

Edit: I am much more a fan of the Russo/Bronze approach of power penalties than trying to be too clever. Tho Kelly did well on sending Falk the wrong way, there was also pace in the shot.

This is the worst penalty I’ve ever seen at PR.

Post your own Euro Championship Quarter Final Penalty stats here, lads.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

The silly reply to that will be - does FIFA on the PS4 count?

The less silly reply will be - if people aren’t allowed to be critical of anything unless they’ve done it themselves, criticism won’t exist. You don’t have to experience something in order to have an opinion on it.

I agree as a general principle. It's just the constant comparison to men's (or boys') football, which always seems to accompany any criticism of the women's game, that gets really old really quickly (that's not aimed at you).

The funny thing is - the majority of supporters of the women’s game DON’T constantly compare it to the men’s game. The only ones who do that (other than the couple of tongue in cheek Ipswich penalty references here) are the men!

People create their own problems and then get mad at them. It’s so dumb.

Sad little men watching poor penalties in a men's fixture: that was a poor penalty by that individual on this occasion.

I agree with that - plus, some use it as a way to criticise the men’s game as overpaid etc. Just a lazy argument.

I do find it especially silly that some find it hilarious when a women’s professional team lose to a 15/16 academy team. Teenagers at that standard aren’t awkward skinny teens but very strong athletes who could beat the s**t out of most fully grown men.

The penalties weren't great - but I've seen a lot of professional games (Men/Women) with equally poor penalties. Worth noting that all the England penalties were on target but the keeper saved (I thoink at least) - they did not miss the target.

Many times in shootouts poor penalties dribble in - but in this case the Swedish keeper gambled on her research and did well to save them. True - they weren't all blasted in but they forced the keeper to save.

People (mainly men) that call out the difference in "standard" between Men and Women's football fsail to understand that while it is played to the same rules, the game is played a fundamentally different way. No different to Tennis, Hockey, Rugby etc etc

Maybe the OP was not intimating this, so I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Laughable, not really, every England player hit the target, forced the keeper to make a save - penalties were made to look worse by the exaggerated movement of the Swedish keeper who had done the research and gambled on which side the shots were heading.

Not perfect penalties, but the level of criticism aimed (mainly by men) is a little embarrassing.

I doubt 99.9% of people criticising those penalties today have ever taken a penalty for their country in a Euro Quarter Final following 120 minutes of pretty physical competition . . .

Yeah they were laughably bad. But I've seen loads of men take equally shiiit pens.

Did laugh at Falk keeping her gloves on when taking the potentially winning penalty though. Power-move is to take them off...
