Sorrento and the surrounding area. 11:48 - Jul 18 with 740 viewsEuanTown

As we have Sicily on the board, I am going to ask for tips on Sorrento and the surrounding area. I know Vesuvius, Herculaneum and Pompeii. Amalfi coast, Positano, Capri, ischia

Anyone got anything not on the usual tourist list or what are the best restaurants, ice cream etc. they can pass on their holiday knowledge.

Much appreciated

Went for a week, based in Sorrento, just before Easter. Porta Marina seafood restaurant was great down at the Harbour. As for everything else I highly recommend Sorrento Insider website. Has ferry times and links to booking for Capri etc etc. very helpful site all round. There are plenty of gelateries and it is easy to spot good from bad! We as a family booked our own guide for Pompeii using Withlocals site. He was really good and worth the money. Portafino was ok, we arrived via bus and is a long walk down to the beach and a walk back up for bus back. Also extremely busy for what is a small villlage built on a cliff! We did a cookery class up in the hills on a damp day - was great fun and educational - Chez Barone.

We went to Capri on a day trip and regretted it, Such a tourist trap.

Sorrento restaurants - Parruchianno (probably spelled wrong!) was really nice, The food was authentic and setting was fab

We did a cooking class in Sorrento also where you cooked, drank wine and ate you own meal at the end with others that you have met, pricey to "cook for yourself" but great experience and learning local cuisine. Probably helped that I was smashed when I left there.

We only did Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri. Wish I had made it around the coast or done some scooter rides through Italian lanes

Not sure how outdoorsy you are but the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) offers incredible views. It was insanely hot the day we did it in August but that meant not many other people around. Take plenty of water. The little café at the end of the hike in Nocelle (above Positano) served what tasted like the best ever beer and lemon granitas...

In Sorrento, Gnocchi is a nice modern alternative restaurant to the typical offering. Their speciality is self-explanatory.

The reviews of Ristobiblioteramuseo L'Osteria del Buonconvento are only average but the venue is interesting and the food is perfectly fine.

If you have a lemon ice cream make sure you don't go large - cost me €30 for two. Even now I occasionally have a small cry at the memory.

Although it’s a bit touristy, the foreigners bar in the middle of Sorrento has some great views while you enjoy a meal or a drink. The Marina doesn’t get as crowded as the centre of Sorrento so head there when the cruise ship contingent arrive, usually about 10/10.30.

Not going to Naples? I love the place, it’s beautiful chaos.

It's probably a bit too far as it's approx 2hrs from Sorrento, but Paestum is a fascinating place to visit.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

There a 3 Tenors thing in a small backstreet in Sorrento…think it was in an old church.
Honestly the best thing I’ve ever done on holiday, they were amazing…Nessum Dorma had me in tears

If you can go a bit further south we like Tropea - a bit less internationally visited than Sorrento and Amalfi area.

As others have said, it will be busy in August but I love it there. I’ve stayed at the Grand Hotel Aminta a handful of times and it’s always been great. Gran Paradiso is also a good choice hotel wise. Lots of great places to eat. Mixed grill at Fauno bar is great if you fancy something different. Four Horse Shoes, isn’t the nicest looking bar but the owner is a great character and it’s a good atmosphere in there. Good base for a boat trip to Capri (a day is more than enough). Hike up mount Vesuvius, trip to Pompeii.

Been donkeys since I was there and that was only 1 night as part of what was a very boozy 6th form trip but have wanted to go back ever since, remember it was one of my favourite stops on the trip

Poll: Will Phil ever confirm we are actually close on a signing ever again
