Have a look at the A68, leave the A1 on the B road through Piercebridge just after Scotch Corner and join the A68 a little before West Auckland (football memorial statue). The road ascends and descends a fair bit in places but if your stomach can take it you will find it much quieter, just as quick and scenic in a strangely wild manner. Couple of good places to fill up in Fir Hill and just before Tow Law (which has a take away with the most unhealthy menu I have yet found.) And a proper job border viewpoint place for a short rest. Joins the Edinburgh ring road after Dalkeith and then take the exit for the lovely new bridge over the Forth to pick up the M90.

That looks a great drive, cheers.

Late change of plans means I'm now considering this as a possibility.

Poll: Lambert goes, would you prefer an ex-Town connection replacement or not?

The things you do for an away point

i'm probably due a whoosh here...

didn't think that away points were awarded for cup matches, let alone friendly matches.

apologies if my irony detector needs recalibrating...

I'm getting train too (with 10yr old)

We're getting off in E'burgh to have 2 or 3 hours there, before finishing the journey off

A few Edinburgh tips, in case you don't know the city well.

Better to have your gear in backpacks than Wheely cases due to cobbles. Alternatively use left luggage lockers at Waverley station.

10 year old friendly food options: there are most bog standard fast food places within 5 minutes of the station, eg McDs, KFC. Next tier up: Franco Manca for pizzas or Wahaca for Mexican are in the same street. There is a Thai restaurant called Chaophraya which has great views of the castle, less than 10 mins walk from the station. Dishoom do great Indian food.

A relatively small Scottish Burger chain called Bread Meats Bread is a five minute walk. They are really good, and have some bizarre and huge creations! Better than Five Guys, but there is one of those nearby, too.

For something a bit more independent, Bubba Qs barbecue place is good. On the Royal Mile 10 minutes walk from the station.

If you want an opportunity to eat some quality Scottish food, Howie's is a good restaurant, usually with a lunch menu, and 5 minutes from the station.

It is tourist season, so booking is advised for those restaurants that take bookings.

Calton Hill is walkable from the station and has great views, especially if the weather is nice. Arthur's Seat is probably tight from the station with bags in a two hour stop.

Lots of good shops, and depending on your son's interests, there will be some good niche shopping options if he likes shopping.

And don't forget to buy him some Edinburgh rock!
