Starting 11 for opening game 19:17 - Jul 21 with 3227 views | cbower | If there are no new signings by the weekend, it's my guess that the starting 11 for Birmingham will already be in the building, so here's my guess. Palmer, Johnson, O'Shea, Greaves, Davis Matusiwa, Humphreys Clarke, Szmodics, Philogene Hirst Subs: Walton, Clarke, Kipre, Taylor, Chaplin, Al-Hamadi, Broadhead That leaves Townsend, Woolfenden, Baggott, Muric, Ogbene, Button out of the 18. I'm sure that many will see it differently though. Obviously assumes Hutchinson and Morsy departing. Does rather expose our limited options in midfield and up top [Post edited 21 Jul 20:32]

You would leave our record signing out of the squad entirely... huh

We kept Taylor as fourth choice for the whole of a season in the Premier League. He featured for us in 32/38 Premier League games. McKenna did not seek to replace him in two transfer windows and picked him ahead of Luongo all season. Suddenly he's below a player who spent all last season as Wycombe's Number 10?

Palmer > Hladky - Palmer Johnson > Tuanzebe - Tuanzebe O’Shea > Woolfenden - O’Shea Greaves > Burgess - Burgess Davis > Davis - Unchanged Matusiwa > Morsy - Unknown but will be tough to replace Samy. Humphreys > Luongo - Luongo J.Clarke > Burns - Burns Szmodics > Chaplin - very similar, but would edge Szmodics Philogene > Hutchinson - Hutchinson Hirst > Hirst - Unchanged So we have certainly upgraded in 2/3 areas, up for debate in a couple, definitely haven’t in some, and unchanged in others. Probably a reflection that we probably haven’t developed as well as we could have since our promotion. |
You ignore the fact that each of the players that are still here have improved. It will depend how each performs over next season, though, and how well we develop as a team. A collection of 11 talented individuals who cannot play as a team invariably gets beaten by a good team with less talent. How much is there between Johnson and Tuanzebe? A lot depends on which Johnson turns out and factor in Tuanzebe's absences too. A fully fit Ashley Young is an upgrade on both (assuming he signs). I think he will be first choice there but won't play any double game weeks. It will be interesting to see how much he does play. Likewise, how much is there between Greaves and Burgess? Clearly McKenna rates Greaves more highly. Hopefully next season we will see why. There is no doubt he didn't perform as well as was hoped last season. Without seeing Matusiwa play it is very difficult to tell how good he is. One thing is for sure, Morsy next season would not have been as good as 2 seasons ago due to his age. If Matusiwa is at least as good (hopefully better) than Morsy was that will go a long way to getting us promoted. We do need the leadership Morsy supplied too. Hopefully that is there within the squad but only time will tell. Humphreys won't start. For all the grief Jack Taylor receives, I can't say he is worse than Luongo was (and certainly would be next season). Taylor was frequently replacing Luongo in that Championship winning season. He made 33 appearances. Burns is still at the club and will return to fitness at some point. If Clarke does not perform as he did, Ogbene will play and is at least on a par with Burns. Again, Philogene didn't perform as we would have hoped last season. If he doesn't this one, he won't remain as first choice. Hutchinson could well stay as yet. We might get another player in.

Quite. He's never managed to nail down a starting berth but he was regularly turned to by McKenna last year.

I don't pick people based on how much they cost. I would much rather pick it based on who I actually think is the best option, and build the best balanced squad we can.

People like Johnson, Greaves, Philogene, J.Clarke were bought for good money to supposedly upgrade on the Championship side, unfortunately there was little to no evidence they were upgrades in anyway, but certainly cost us a few quid. Did make me chuckle though when you said Ashley Young will be an upgrade on Tuanzebe though | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Burgess better than Greaves and Burns better than Clarke?! And Chaplin close to Szmodics?? Crazy.

I guess that's why so many Premier League clubs were keen to sign Tuanzebe while Ashley Young had to drop down a division. I don't think Ashley Young will play as regularly as Tuanzebe did when he played for us in the Championship but I would expect him to be as good defensively and more of a threat going forward. He made 32 Premier League appearances (19 starts) for a team that got well over double the number of points as the team Tuanzebe played for last season. What makes you think Ashley Young will be a worse player than Tuanzebe was two seasons ago?
