Parking the question of who is right or wrong, it is a perfect microcosm of the way that we have all been divided into tribes by the people with hands on the levers of power in recent years. Brexit is the most obvious example here, but there are loads more, and it's very evidently a deliberate ploy to divide populations into things they disagree about rather than unite on the things they agree on. The USA over the last decade is obviously another good example.
I try my hardest not to get sucked in, but it's becoming increasingly hard to just ignore stuff that I find almost upsetting at times.
Think im going to go football only on here for a bit. Which is a shame, as I do value seeing different views to challenge my world view.
Appreciate that this is a bit of a look at me post, but wanted to be able to vent a bit.

I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
'Donald Trump said early on Thursday that he plans to designate antifa as a “major terrorist organization”.
Antifa, short for “anti-fascists”, is an umbrella term for far-left-leaning activist groups and is not a single entity. These are groups that resist fascists and neo-Nazis, especially at demonstrations.'
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

That is funny in a way. Trump doesn't listen to his advisors and has no filter. They must cringe at some of the stuff he comes out with.
It stops being funny when you think after Trump is probably Vance who will be even worse.

The lefts new hero.
It’s been truly sad to watch your transformation on these pages, from reasoned and non judgmental to this.
Is it not fair to reflect on how malleable our supposed “objectivity” really is? I don’t think many people here have changed at their core, but the script has been rewritten by the absurd theatre of the “culture wars.”
What unsettles me most is the idea of left and right having “heroes.” That feels symptomatic of a wider problem: we’re becoming amplifiers for whoever shouts loudest, while anyone who challenges the message often has their own personality torn down in retaliation.
The real villain here is the broad acceptance that individual thought lags behind populist pull. That’s the point where humanity starts to stagnate rather than innovate.
And while “Love thy neighbour” may feel trite and cliché, I’d argue “Listen to thy neighbour” is the better starting point if we want to push past division - even here on TWTD, among people many of us have grown up (and grown older) with.
TL;DR: The only heroes we need are made of chocolate.

Must be fake news mate, I’m reliably informed by TWTD that the United States government is totally normal and anyone who thinks they’re fascist is ‘making it up’ and down playing REAL FASCISM.
ANTIFA are probably really bad guys or something.

Dick Gaughan summed it up well.
I don't believe in heroes, but I might be tempted to make an exception for Beattie, Thijssen and Brazil.

Because I assume, at some point, his advisors are going to tell him it's not possible and explain why.
Maybe during his first term, but this time he's done a much better job of surrounding himself with sycophants. Besides, who needs policy change when you have a cult like following who will take action for you.

He's been quite happy using executive orders for all kinds of nonsense so I wouldn't put it past him doing it again. I imagine it'd be challenged through the courts if he does but even still, the fact he's saying these things is worrying, not funny. It reinforces for his supporters that people who are against fascism are the enemy. It legitimises them as a target. I am still struggling to see how it's funny.

How would that work? A list of any group remotely considered to be under the Antifa umbrella which is constantly updated?
That would obviously be an issue but seems a step too far even for Trump. I guess it could happen though. If it does then it would feel like this whole thing had ramped up a few notches.

I’ll be completely honest here, I don’t have the first fcuking clue about politics. I couldn’t tell you a single thing about Gaza/Israel or far right/far left. There’s a part of me that thinks I could really do with educating myself on it all, but then I come across threads on here which just turn in to sh!t shows and think what’s the point?
Not only that, but I’m a 33 year old with a wife and 2 young kids with a busy job and genuinely don’t know at what point during a day I would remotely have time to educate myself on it all, and even as I post this at 9.26pm, I’m about an hour past my bedtime!
I’ll definitely just stick to the football.
It’s never too late to learn, and if you do ever find the time, this forum can be a great educator once you work out who’s worth listening to (on all of ‘left’, ‘right’ and ‘middle’); and who to ignore.

Whether it would work practically is another matter but the fact he's talking about it is troubling. Regardless of someone's political leanings (other than those who are openly fascists) branding people who are anti-fascist as terrorists should be worrying. The constant divisive rhetoric from Trump and his backers, some of which is extreme, is a huge contributor to the problems we're seeing in the US and here.

I love a bit of Reddit too. It’s weird in the sense that it’s the only seemingly non-serious social media site that i actually feel benefits me intellectually after reading. I don’t think it’d a total waste of time basically.
- TWTD (is that social media somewhat?) - very heavy on debates sometimes. Political usually. Obviously has a plus of a great community on the whole. Good for advice and in a crisis too. - Twitter - a cesspit of the far right. Musk has allowed it to go that way. - Instagram - I’ve a long term view that 99.9% of instagram is people just simply portraying a fake lifestyle to show people the life they pretend they’re living. - Facebook - 90% of people on their are grandmas or Middle Aged Karen’s - TikTok - arguably is too chilled. Easy to doomscroll but it’s all nonsense on there. I think I lose brain cells by watching it. - Reddit - that perfect blend of having some genuinely interesting info, enough clever people to gain knowledge from but also being chilled enough not to make you leave feeling more depressed than you started.
I would say Facebook is up there with, and possibly beyond tbh, Twitter/X as something that has become deeply dangerous.

Far, far worse imho.
Also for mining users' personal data.
Local community groups can be useful for finding recommended tradespeople; and it can also be good for sharing interests in specific groups such as dog-owners - but people need to be a lot more careful than most are to never share their real birthday, geographical address etc.

Your first paragraph - applies to many of us unfortunately including those who have a lot to say. We all could do with more educating and less commenting.
I have a politics degree but every day I grow older I realise more how little I actually understand. Hence why I am a little quieter with the opinions than I used to be round here.

True. But I’d be willing to do that for you all. Martyring myself for the good of the forum. It’s the sort of selfless dedication I’m capable of. #ThankYouRommy

Your post reminds me of Dee Ramone's acceptance speech when the Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
