Card readers/payment providers 09:06 - Nov 2 with 803 viewsZx1988

The Good Lady Wife and I are going to be doing a few jumble sale type things in the run up to Christmas, to clear some space at Château Zx. We've figured that it might be useful to be able to accept card payments, in order to boost our revenue.

Can anyone recommend a decent provider for this, that won't come with too much cost given that our use of the system is likely to be limited?

Square and SumUp look half decent, but are there any others we should consider? Ideally a fixed percentage fee would be useful (with no minimum fee, or flat rate added on top), given that we may be taking some rather low individual payments.

Who turns up to something like that expecting to pay by card?

Although I haven't been to a car boot sale of similar for about 15 years so I may be out of touch...

Truly impaired.

We're not envisaging doing huge amounts of trade with it but, at the same time, it would be useful to be able to offer a payment option to those who've already spent their cash, expect to be able to pay by card, or want what we're selling but don't have enough cash with them.

"How much do you want for that?"
"Fiver"
"Ah, I've only got three quid with me..."

My partner has used Square for several years and had never had any issues with it.

Everyone! And not card, but phone.

As long as there is signal, obviously.

To the OP: we have used SumUp for a small chairity's events.

My advice is it is best not to overthink it and, rather than spend hours researching and never getting round to making a decision, just commit to one of the main providers today so that you can start using it as soon as possible.

I've got a SumUp card reader from my days as a taxi driver and I can recommend them. But if you're just flogging a few bits as a one off, why bother, it's going to cost you £30 to get the most basic model and then just shy of 2% of any sale.

Seemingly it doesn't even need a physical reader these days - I've managed to set up on my phone using the app, and my phone becomes the card reader.

No up-front cost, just a 2.5% fee on each transaction. Given that most sales will likely be under £10, it's probably cheaper than taking cash and then having to drive into the city, pay to park, and deposit the cash at the bank.

Fair enough.

Although rather than stressing about depositing cash at the bank just enjoy spending it in a shop or even better a pub.

Would the average person trust your card reader credentials? Instinctively I feel I wouldn't, though my imagination may be doing your stall a disservice.

Edit just offering this as a thought to consider lol, given the expense. If you had a name tag identifying yourself as Zx1988 then I'd have no concerns of course, but as a random jumble seller I'm less sure (unless it's a normal thing now, I'm very out of touch).

Sum up is what my wife uses, tho I did come across someone at a trade fair in May that claimed to be cheaper.

And as others have said your mobile can accept the payments no need for a card reader - I believe the reader's WiFi could be compromised putting security at risk for both vendor & buyer

You can download the sum up app and take payments n a phone now rather than have a terminal.

I send a team to a few famers markets and they just download the sum up app without a terminal.

SumUp, same day payouts, you can take payments on your phone as well or a cheap card reader if youd rather use that.

Square is the best imo, followed by SumUp. Square have got a Black Friday sale on too, or you could just download their app and take payments on your phone for free.
