The Trump editing is part of the same report. "Prescott told bosses including Samir Shah, the BBC chair, and Tim Davie, the director-general, that the BBC’s coverage of Gaza was biased. “The errors come thick and fast, sometimes with ‘eyewitness’ testimony from locals who have tweeted in praise of the October 7 killings and worse,” Prescott said. “The BBC needs to accept it has systemic issues with the coverage. Only then can the process properly begin to fix the problem.” The claims appeared in the 19-page document, which also said the BBC misrepresented a speech by President Trump given on the day of the Capitol riots. I'm making no comment on the actions of the Israeli government. Only linking the report of the internal memo which has cost Davie his job.

I'm confused by the point you are trying to make. Are you accepting the finding in the document regarding the Trump edit but rejecting the findings in the document regarding alleged bias in its reporting of Israel’s war in Gaza? Are you accepting that the memo exists when the Guardian reports it's existence but reject it's existence when the Telegraph reports it existence? Are you saying that Davie has been hounded out and should remain in post? And it’s not just a “memo from one person”. It’s a 20 page document from Michael Prescott, a former independent external adviser to the broadcaster's editorial standards committee. The Beeb sat on this for six months. And what is the GB News whatabouttery? How is GB News reevent? Probably best to leave it there as I'm not sure even you know your own position in this. [Post edited 9 Nov 21:41]

I accept the memo exists Just a little sceptical that one person's opinion gets turned into fact re the alleged bias. The Trump editing is factual and was stupid imo Not sure that justifies his removal though But this is just my own opinion and accept other people will come to different conclusions

the bbc's problem is that while at a senior level, and throughout management and it's senior journalists, it has an absolute commitment to impartiality, that isn't replicated at the level of researchers and junior reporters. it's intake of recent graduates at that lower level is not at all diverse in terms of their views and on a range of political and social issues many of them just don't recognise their bias or the need for impartiality. in terms of story selection, and who they interview, and what take they highlight there is too often an obvious lack of political diversity amongst those doing the research and bookings etc.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

I wonder whether it would be better for the BBC to take this sort of stuff back in house (I was surprised to find out they don't make Panorama themselves) and have proper editorial control rather than outsourcing it to private companies that won't necessarily have the same standards (even if the contracts say they must).

The BBC technically don’t make anything in-house, the closest is their commercial production company BBC Studios which also makes shows for lots of different broadcasters. Panorama is a strand which independent production companies can pitch into, the commissioning process is painstakingly long and BBC executives have pretty much constant eyes on the edit

You're right though buh, apart from shady kids show hosts, the BBC was a wonderful thing. Ah, the evenings spent watching tv, as a family, were special. I remember the anticipation and excitement of waiting for Match Of The Day, then looking forward to the next morning when we could squabble over who was Paul Mariner or Kevin Keegan, in the local park.

| Well well well (part 2) on 07:57 - Nov 10 with 932 views | DJR | People like me on the left think the BBC is biased the other way. For example, it bought the austerity agenda of the coalition government lock, stock and barrel. The difference though is that criticisms from the left are not amplified in the same way as criticisms from the right. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2025/nov/09/bbc-bias-row-timeline-a-week-of-ho Indeed, as the article above indicates it even leads to things such as the following headline against someone who was president of the Conservative association at Oxford. “BORIS’S BLAST AT ‘ARROGANT’ NICK ROBINSON FOR CLAIMING BIAS ROW IS AN ANTI-BBC PLOT”. The hostility to the BBC is both political and commercial. It has also been going on since the 1980s. when Mrs Thatcher's favourite Marmaduke Hussey set out to root out what he thought of as left-wing bias, and started off with ousting the DG Alastair Milne. And this at a time when researchers at Glasgow University concluded that the BBC had a pro (Tory) government slant. Constant criticism from the right has in my view made the BBC a very timid organisation which seems scared of its own shadow. This means, for example, that its political commentators are very bland in contrast to, say, those on Sky News who are not afraid to call a spade a spade. But even this isn't enough for its critics. The irony these days is that the right has control of much of the media landscape, including social media and its own news channels (such as GB News). But this is not enough. The ultimate aim of some appears to be to end the BBC but I think Tory MPs rejoicing at the latest news need to be careful of what they wish for given the possibility of a Reform government. They might happily remove the obligation for impartiality on public service broadcasters and lead us down a route where something like Fox News becomes the main outlet for broadcast news. EDIT: the Blair government should not be immune from criticism either with the disgraceful hounding of the BBC in the light of the Andrew Gilligan report, which in turn led to the resignation of the DG Greg Dyke. I don't think this is even debatable anymore. Children shot in their heads, while queuing for food and paramedics buried along with their ambulances, after being shot dead while doing their jobs, is pretty conclusive. | |
