I was at the Opticians today for the annual check. I go once a year because there is a history of glaucoma in the family.

The Optician said that the Govt are pushing free eye tests for people with potential health conditions and the elderly out to two years. Why? To save money. The reality is that if I feel it necessary I will pay for an eye test in a years time. Why? Because it doesn’t get more precious than eyesight and I can afford it.

So what about people who can’t afford it? Tough. Mrs C tells me breast screening is being pushed out for the same reason. Money. Yet if they find something or a person discovers a lump, it’s far harder, much more costly and life threatening than if caught early by screening.

So when it comes to it, what are the govt there for? People’s well-being or their own? It would seem that for eye health anyway, they’re certainly not there for the poorest in society.

No massive surprises there Churchy.

There is a proven link between mouth disease and Dementia, but is there any sign of the govt. reinvigorating NHS dentistry? No. I guess Dementia is a long term disease so the epidemic caused by poor dental health in the UK is another governments problem.

It’s a very good point, CB.i haven’t really thought about that.

Both my parents got dementia. Probably just old age, but especially with my dad his teeth/dental health was awful a long time before he got ill. The stingy git refused to go privately, despite my urging and him having more than enough £. If he hadn’t I’d have paid for it no problem. My mum stopped going altogether.

Screening is so important, but not to the politicians. Certainly when it comes to bowel screening, I was told that it really is a life saver. If they discover a problem it can be resolved. If you discover a problem, you are in a world of trouble. For me, prevention is a no brainer. But I guess for politicians there is no ‘return’ for them. No photo opportunities or votes unlike a concerned simpering expression standing next to a very unwell person in a hospital bed.

Cynical me? Yes, but I’ve been close enough in a different time and place to see what many of these lizards are like.

Move to Scotland, we all get free eye tests, free hearing aids and support if you need them. On top of that housing is generally more affordable, the scenery is wonderful and the people for the most part very friendly....

Hear, hear.

Somewhat tangentially related, my father-in-law has Stargardt disease. His vision is, at best, around 15-20% now. He's in his early 60s and is battling on with work, but it's incredibly difficult for him and, I imagine, remarkably frustrating.

Yet, were he to pack in work, there is very little help for him, aside from the help that you or I would get. Just feels wrong. I don't desire to live in a welfare state, but it hammers home the point that we don't - just certain sections of society make out as though we do.

I doubt there is a causal effect between mouth disease and dementia, more likely it is 2 bodily deteriorations moving in sync.

I now have to budget £2-3,000 p/a out of my SP & small work pension for private dentistry - just the basics, fillings, extraction/s.

I have ulcerative colitis and have been in flare-up for the past 8 months; the only time/reason you get to see a gastrointestinal specialist is for a cancer check, which achieves nothing (edit: I mean in terms of dealing with the long-term chronic disease itself) except in my case making things worse because the laxatives you have to take for the colonoscopy actually trigger my symptoms.

You no longer get to see any specialist to discuss what’s *causing* the symptoms (which for many people eventually lead to cancer, costing the NHS a lot more).

Like others, I’m left to either go private or work it out for myself. Having tried several types of herbal remedies to no avail, I think I might just have hit on the answer - completely cutting out sugar - no biccies, cakes, sugar in drinks etc. - along with the usual no dairy & no fruit. No symptoms for 2 days now anyway🤞

They don't usually get things wrong in The Lancet. I'll defer to the research of healthcare professionals.

I certainly would never dig out the people who work for the NHS. You’ll not find a post of mine that does. They’re amazing people and do a job I could never do.

The politicians and people like NHS England (some of who I worked with), I’m happy to lay into with aplomb.

My vote? Yes. Wasted though because a turd with a blue rosette would get in here.

I wa speculating, of course and will happily defer to the writer in the Lancet. It is an interesting link between the 2 conditions. Presumaby whatever is causing the decay in the mouth is also causing the brain to alter or decay?

The weather isn't terrible in Edinburgh. Much better than I expected.

For those who don't like the heatwaves you are getting in England now, you should look into it. Very pleasant mild spring and autumn, and slightly warm summers.

Winter is dark. But only really cold every 5 years when the weather systems flip and there is a "Beast from the East". And then it is very cold in the rest of the UK, too.

Out in the Western Isles things are a wee bit different, Gales are increasingly frequent and at least one fortnight long iron frost is all but guaranteed - that Gulf Stream is ebbing away just as predicted. So I am seriously considering an East Coast move, but not Edinburgh, you'll no' catch me moving back to England...No, I'm thinking between Aberdeen and Dundee, colder but sunnier and drier.

I wonder if it's any warmer in the Orkney Islands now than when I was there between 1991-4. The average daytime temperature in "summer" was 14C, usually with a pretty stiff breeze which gave it a "feels like" of about 10C! 🥶

Black Isle?

You've not been in a proper wind though until you've been in a 140mph-er like the hurricane that hit Orkney in the wee small hours one New Years Day (1993?).

I've got ex-neighbours just to the north of the Black Isle and I did consider Tain for a while but something doesn't quite rock my boat there.

Storm Floris was a wild one, got up to 124 miles per hour in the Cairngorms and my house over on Skye got shaken to it's very foundations three times over the day, as well as a widowmaker of a branch coming down off of one of my sycamores. But the worry now is not really the ferocity of singular events, it's the frequency and regularity of seven, eights and nines on the Beaufort scale. You'd be a fool to work in the garden whilst they are on.

I thought it already was every 2 years for a free NHS test unless the clinician decides that a test within a shorter period is clinically justified.

Is that right about the link? (Not questioning, I just hadn’t heard that so will start brushing 3 times a day. Or maybe 30).

I hope your house is solid stone!

Found this interesting article on the storm I mentioned which was actually NYD 1992 & nicknamed 'The Hogmany Hurricane'. Apparently though it was technically an extratropical cyclone, not a hurricane. Sadly, two young birdwatchers in Shetland lost their lives when their hut blew away.

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/1992_New_Year's_Day_Storm

"This storm is regarded to be the most powerful storm to have hit the UK in reliable recorded history, and is a contender for the world's strongest extratropical cyclone in terms of raw windspeeds.[3]" (197mph was recorded but couldn't be put on the books as instruments broke when the speeds increased! In Orkney, the instrument on the roof of the relatively sheltered dairy in Kirkwall broke at 139mph; I lived in an old stone cott on the cliff-edge of a western headland!).
