Nothing whatsoever. However, we now have a mayor here in the East Midlands, a completely incoherent geographic region. It's another layer of governance with all the cost and infrastructure that comes with that, not to mention the cost of elections etc. We've already elected layers of councils which have served us all well for many years. Sticking an expensive cherry on top and diverting budget that could be spent on essential services to them is wasteful.

They have absolutely no police powers or operational role. It is wrong that they are referred to as “police chiefs” which infers they are “the boss.” PCC’s are responsible for securing the budget and ensuring they are used efficiently as well as appointing Chief Officers. One of the problems is that they are pissed with their own self-importance and stand in front of the press saying “we” are doing x, y and z operationally.

I suppose that makes sense as an argument. I can see the benefits if there’s no duplication and they’re serving district areas with common problems. East Midlands seems like a bit of a mish mash.

They werent a waste of money because that money will still get spent on guess what, someone or some body who manages the polices priorities at a local level, because also guess what the Met police have different issues and policing needs to Suffolk and the Home Office can't set generic one size fits all processes for them All you will lose is the directly electable aspect of. The one issue with PCCs were the political parties, politicised it, instead of doing what they said they do and keep out of it. Change that aspect and include the votes with council elections they'd have been no issue. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Within 12 months expect to see moves to merge Police Forces, Norfolk & Suffolk for example. They already operate jointly in many areas of operation. We can also expect a mayor to sit above all Councils in the two Counties. None of this works however unless Starmer & Reeves start to grow the economy.
