Akpom looks like a real puzzle - either he doesn't want to know or he isn't fitting into our system. I can't believe he scored 28 goals in 38 games for Boro at this level.

It is amazing what confidence can do but clearly he fitted Boro's system better than ours I've no doubt a confident Akpom is a different proposition but we aren't doing anything to unlock that Szmodics is a similar puzzle for similar reasons

He looked a bit more frantic than normal when he came on. Nunez has a good brain. My biggest annoyance was McAteer coming on and being instantly offside.

Hirst found himself next to Mcateer (or walle) on the wing at one point. No wonder the ball gets played back when our only striker isn’t even in the box to challenge a cross

Agree. It's been a theme this season. Hirst does get sucked back into play when he needs to be on the penalty spot. Azon did it a bit first half too. We were just generally very frustrating today. Essentially if Philogene doesn't win the game for us we are painfully one dimensional.

That sums it up for me, we hope he can pull a rabbit from a hat in the opening 20/25, if that fails we look lost. It’s a mess, and I personally think we are a far worse team than the one that we went up with previously, despite spending a fortune. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Unless they dropped in and got involved themselves both strikers just weren't in the game. Too slow to get the ball going that by the time it reached a position they might be able to do something, they were sandwiched out by about 5 defenders. Not quite as convinced as some that Nunez solves our '10' problem but he does at least always show for the ball and tries to move it forwards quickly.

He really did not stand much of a chance, 1 smallish guy against 3 bigger ones. He is not the battering ram that Hirst is. Seems like strange decision making to me from the manager.

Indeed. Not for the first time this season

Have to agree. Azon on a high line or tired defensive line away from home makes loads of sense. Hirst was the call yesterday.

I would genuinely love to see Humphreys in the role, think he is technically cute enough and would tie everything together. Meanwhile I wonder if a move for Szmodics, if fit, in January would benefit him and create space for (as someone else said on another post) a 6ft 3 Chaplin like player. Need a Davis style right back too, he’d have had a field day down that side.
