ITFC not keen though apparently…

Engineering works on the line between Norwich and Ipswich mean the next East Anglian derby could be switched to a Friday night, sparking fears of trouble on the city streets.

Norfolk police have approached the two clubs and the football league about potentially moving the Carrow Road fixture to the evening of April 10, rather than the following afternoon as currently scheduled.

The prospect of an evening kick off has triggered concerns it could lead to more disorder, as fans would have longer to drink beforehand, while officers will also have to deal with usual Friday night activities in the city centre.

Talks between the clubs, the police and the football league are under way.

The derby is currently due to be played at 3pm on Saturday April 11, but the often fiery fixture has regularly been switched to 12pm on a Sunday to head off disorder.

However, with Network Rail due to be carrying out engineering work on the railway line between Norwich and Ipswich that weekend, it is understood that police are worried that, with train services disrupted, more fans will arrive by car - making it harder to marshal them.

Norfolk Constabulary has approached the clubs and the EFL about moving the match and it is understood one of the options is for an evening kick-off on Friday, April 10, when trains will be available.

A police spokeswoman said: “We're having ongoing conversations with all partners to explore the options available.”

Network Rail did not respond to a request for a comment, but a spokesman for Greater Anglia, which runs the trains, said: "We are aware of the gameweek when this match is scheduled and will ensure we work closely with all stakeholders involved when preparing."

Norwich City and their Suffolk rivals have not commented publicly.

But it is understood Ipswich Town Football Club is keen for the game to be played at the weekend, rather than on the Friday night - and officials are making representations about how to achieve that.

However, the prospect of a Friday night kick-off next April has raised eyebrows, given the often volatile nature of the fixture and the ground's proximity to Norwich's busy night-time district of Prince of Wales Road.

People living in the area are worried that fans from both clubs could take the Friday afternoon off and start drinking hours before kick-off.

When the two sides last met at Carrow Road - which had a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday, April 6 and ended in a 1-0 win for the Canaries - there were ugly scenes as rival fans confronted each other.

Seventeen people were arrested over violent disorder which broke out in roads near Carrow Road and some supporters were given jail sentences.

Previous years have also seen trouble and arrests before and after games between the two sides.

During a derby match at Ipswich's Portman Road in December last year, chants of "scum" were directed at Norwich City's then joint majority shareholder Delia Smith, with a can of lager thrown at her car.

The animosity could be even fiercer this year, with Norwich City currently facing a fight against relegation and their bitter rivals chasing a return to the Premier League.

Norwich City's controversial sale of Marcelino Nunez, who scored the winner against Ipswich the last time the sides met at Carrow Road, to the Tractor Boys has also upped the ante.

They probably did it on purpose so they could then put a stop to it.

Worst away day of the season and not enjoyable at all.

Yeah I said I wasn't going to bother again after last time but a Friday night and the potential to put them deep into relegation bother quite appealing.

If they do this, I suspect they will 'bubble' it for those who have tickets and lay on coaches.

Us being in Norwich has historically caused more trouble on derby days, not least because Town fans don't get the same luxuries of a provided watering hole sitting there waiting at the train station and will get to Nodge early and seek out their own entertainment.

A bit surprised they are considering it. That Maundy Tuesday in 2011, while not rupturing into the full scale disorder which was seen in Burrell Road '98 or in Nodge after the 85 semi second leg, certainly caused more issues than had it been a lunchtime.

The pubs certainly did well out of it that day though. Absolutely hundreds of Town fans drinking from silly o'clock.

Maundy Thursday.

Maundy Thursday? I usually park at Gatwick for an away trip to their ground.

As Radlett aludes to, derbies within the same city are a different kettle of fish. There's certainly the needle aspect, but the fans will generally live with each other in daily life, work with each other, and form friendships across the divide. It all probably serves to dampen down some of the 'hate'.

Longer-distance derbies such as ours, Newcastle v Sunderland, Man Utd v Leeds etc., are potentially harder to police owing to the distance between the fans and the fact that, typically, there won't be too much mixing of the fans in day-to-day life.

That's a fair point, I hadn't considered the distance aspect and I imagine the large number of fans travelling by train would be a factor.

That was a good day. If my memory serves me correctly wasn't Pals shutting down shortly after it? I remember it being heaving and Town fans drinking it dry before they locked up for 1 last time. They timed that well to get all the old stock gone.

I'm going to the grand national that weekend so the Friday night match would be perfect for me. Especially if it is on TV.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up getting ‘bussed’ there if there are no trains and it remains on the Saturday/Sunday

There were engineering works when we played up there in December 2008 and we weren't bussed there. Although I do recall passing a minibus or two the police had stopped on the A140.

It would be nice if that's the game that confirms their relegation to league one if we beat them. Would be splendid to see them crying in the barclay lol

I think there was a Friday night game at PR a few years ago, I seem to remember a group of Town fans not attending the match stopped the nodge fans in the police escorted bubble, getting to the ground until 10 or 15 minutes after kick-off.

It wasnt just the fans. Our goalkeeper never did turn up that day either.

I'd be stunned in Norfolk Constabulary are pushing for this, Prince of Wales is a nightmare on a friday night generally, without football.

Norfolk plod and NCFC pushing for the Friday. Ipswich plod and ITFC do not want the Friday.

Norwich away has never been the same since they shut the away pub on the river. That was bloody brilliant.

It's the worst away day, I agree. and has been for far too long - until it becomes the best, and it's likely to become the best this season.

You get me.

It will be this. Travel mandatory with ticket purchases and then busses to Diss with a hop on the train into the city to be kettled in and out.

I was going to say earlier I’m sure this has happened before, because we drove and usually get the train.
Think my brother drove, and I can remember being outside the corner of the Jarrold / River Stands drinking from one of the outside drinks vendors.

It’s so exaggerated.

It would be fine on the Friday, probably better, yeah some will take the day/afternoon off but most wouldn’t.

Just train from Ipswich after a couple of shandy’s in the station hotel as per.

My view is probably tainted by my experience of the last time we played them at PR with an evening ko. I got threatened by Town fans because I wouldn’t join in baiting a Norwich fan who made the mistake of going into the Black Horse before the game. These weren’t chavs. They were 50 year old blokes who had clearly been on the lash all day. Then saw a man who must have been in his 70s with his head covered in blood outside the ground.

No it wouldn't. There would be a handful of chavy idiots, from both sides, who can't behave themselves, as always.

Only takes a handful to make a bad day for everyone.

Unless they're thinking of one of those you're marched from the station to the ground and back again setups and thats the only way as an away fan you'll be permitted in the ground.

Suspect there more to this proposal than is being said out loud so far

It was carnage in the late 90s when they were on a Friday night
