We currently send you an email if you're not online and someone sends you a DM. I think it's causing an issue with Microsoft and their services (Hotmail, Live, Outlook etc) and we get blocked often. Getting that unblocked is a pain in the ... We use this server also for password resets and new accounts so it's an issue for me.

Would it cause anyone an issue if we turned this off?

Caused me a problem about 18 months (?) ago as you know - wasn’t getting any alerts through to my hotmail account, so switched alerts from TWTD to my secondary, not microsoft, account. I imagine most people have a second email they can switch to?

How important is it that you get a notification I guess is my question.

Perhaps if you log on regularly then you don't need an email, but if you have an unread one that you've not seen in a couple of days then perhaps that could trigger an email. Or just send one out if that person hasn't logged in in 24hrs.

I can't really ask people not to use MS accounts, but I'll have a think about how to reduce the amount of emails we send out for this.

I do want to change the format of the page to be more of a whatsapp style conversation rather than email exchange.

It's fine to get rid of it for me. I'm literally on here every day so I'll see the flashing red thingy without the need for an email.

I’d say extremely important - can go days without logging in, esp in the close season, and some things can be time-critical.

Just a personal view.

No offence to Phil and Gav, but what messages are they sending you that are that important?!

Time critical? I'm uncomfortable with someone using this for life-or-death reasons! If you're having important conversations then you need to swap contact details.

I think I need to adapt it so that if you've not seen a message within 24 hrs then I'll send an email. I'm not doing this any time soon. Probably the summer.

Well, depends on whether those to whom you say “my PMs are always open even in the wee small hours as I’m often up then anyway”, on mental health or other support threads, ever take you up on the offer I guess.

Personally I wouldnt be comfortable giving my own contact details to someone I don’t know, so I’d say please don’t remove the immediacy for the option of safe contact via PMs here.

Agreed. I spend far too much of my life on this fabulous corner of the web for an email to be of any use. For me, it's just clutter.

Ok, I'm not convinced the email notification was working as it should as the code made no sense.

I've just made a change. If you've not been online in the last 15 mins then you'll get an email. If you don't think this is working now please let me know.

I think people are getting these emails and hitting "these are junk" which is why we're getting blocked. I've asked MS to unblock us again. We were blocked in August and again in September.

That's great, thanks 👍

I think that for some people, just knowing that the option is available to talk 'anonymously' (ie via usernames) wth someone very quickly if they want, is reassuring.

It perhaps should be a setting in your account to say you want to be notified in this way, but make the default "no".

Yes, I'll sort that in the summer.

Gav, I assume this is some sort of anti-commercial spam protection Microsoft have built into their email servers, rejecting mail from addresses flagged as mailing lists and the like, if they send too frequently?

I understand that you can't stop people using Microsoft email accounts, but cannot the owner of the target email address whitelist TWTD emails on the Microsoft email servers for uninhibited receipt?

I'm not sure they can. I think its a blanket ban on my IP.

This is why I moved our mailing list off this IP so that important emails get through.

Hah, you're assuming way too much competency from microsoft there!

I later changed from them anyway due to their complete failure to control extraordinary amounts of phishing + hundreds of attempts to hack my account every month (tho at least they notified me of those).

Just ban any user with an MS email account. You really dont need that riffraff on here with all their childish email accounts.

My email notifications saying I have a PM seems to go to my junk folder so no loss there. I’ll see I’ve got a message when I log on and it’s hardly going to be a matter of life or death with all due respect.

You've supported mental health threads in the past and the ability for anyone experiencing acute problems to open up to anyone on here who they're comfortable with (even if they haven't met) rather than to a total stranger via more formal channels, quickly though.

Hardly a 'trivial' matter as the poster after yourself calls it.
