Charlie Austin on walking in to Portman Rd and nearly signing for us 15:05 - Nov 28 with 1487 viewsIllinoisblue

He was on one of the 137 different “ex players chat and bantz” shows and mentioned he was walking through the doors at Portman Rd all set to sign for us (think this was 2010 or 11) but his agent got a call from Burnley so they left and went up there to sign for them instead.

He claims it’s because Ipswich wanted to do a full medical which would have revealed he had a long standing shoulder issue and would have caused the deal to collapse.

Went on to say Burnley didn’t do any kind of medical (hard to believe) but he ended up scoring 41 goals in 82 appearances for them. Guess he made the right decision!

There is zero chance Burnley didn't do a medical.

Sounds very much like Austin went back on his word to sign for us, and jumped ship when Burnley offered more money. Don’t know why he didn’t just say that instead of this weird medical tale.

The clue is in the 'bantz' on the original post.

I actually bumped into their chairman on a train some years back and he reckoned it was wanting to work with Eddie Howe was what swung it their way. I listened to that bit of the podcast yesterday and I don't think he said he opted not to join us due to the prospect of a medical, more that he subsequently thought that Town's medical would have picked up his shoulder issue which Burnley's more laidback approach didn't. Wouldn't surprise me at all that a club was less than professional with its medicals.

Yes. I can remember him saying that when CA left the training ground he knew he wasn't going to sign.

He was over the line here allowed to return home to think about it, but convinced by Eddie Howe he 'owed him' so signed for them...
