The thing is with London is that 30% of it is absolutely fantastic, full of culture and history. Another 30% is ok to good. The rest is an overpriced cesspit.

100% of it is overpriced. I love London tbh. I like Penge too FWIW, a good friend used to live in the Crystal Palace - Penge - Anerley 'triangle' and its decent around there. As for Ipswich, its got a few qualities. Oldest continually inhabited settlement in the country I think (since 6th or 7th century), a lot of impressive historic buildings, excellent park, waterfront etc. Some of the streets towards the centre are characterful and pleasant, but the town centre really lets it down currently. There's plenty of worse places but must admit it's not an obvious choice for City (town) of Culture is it? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I haven't lived in Ipswich for about 15 years but follow a few Ipswich related things on insta etc. It looks like there's some good stuff going on and some good people trying to make things happen Brighten the corners looks like a huge success for example Also seemed to be a book festival recently The development of Stoke Bridge looked pretty cool Also looks like more and more independent cafes, bars, studios, shops etc

Not sure Hull, Coventry or Bradford were obvious choices either!
| Ipswich bids for City of Culture?!? on 16:13 - Nov 28 with 808 views | vapour_trail | City of culture award is an opportunity to add some cultural life to a place that doesn’t necessarily demonstrate a lot of residual evidence of that previously being the case. Be a great thing to get for the town. | |

Fair point. It also looks like one of Ipswich's competitors is Portsmouth, which is absolutely rank. Maybe they should rename the award.

Yeah but Hull got it once which, as someone who has been there a fair bit, was a shock

Isn't there a sense in which it is about hosting events and becoming a cultural centre for the year as much as already being renowned for culture? If that's the case, good luck to the town. I feel like it is improving since GameChanger has become involved in the football club and I don't think that is entirely coincidence either.

| Ipswich bids for City of Culture?!? on 19:33 - Nov 28 with 267 views | Dubtractor | Ipswich is a lot better than it was. There are loads of interesting shows at the wolsey theatre. The brighten the corners crowd have created 3 live music venues (smokehouse, the baths, st Stephens church) all of which have gigs on most weeks. Loads of other events at the church during day time. Loads of interesting history and buildings all over the town centre. Great parks. Most of it you wouldn't know about as a fortnightly day tripper though, and obviously it's pretty weak compared to trendy London, but there is loads of interest if you look for it. As others have said though, city of culture is about shining a light on what is there, but also bringing more interest and funding in to build on it. | |

It is - Even Partridge would approve of the pedestrianisation of Bradford city centre. The Bantam of the Opera choir made up of City fans are up for a SPOTY award. There's been lots of stuff going on even if some of it wasn't all up my street.
