Found myself listening to Time whilst I was rustling up dinner this afternoon, in particular 'Yours Truly, 2095':
Is Jeff Lynne some sort of time traveller, or something? It's amazing some of the things this song 'predicts', especially with even an oblique mention of Bluetooth...

Best group, ever
There is a great documentary about ELO on you tube. After about 3 minutes Jeff sings in the mirror at his home and his voice is still amazing. He has given us so many great Songs and memories. Strange Magic !

Time is an excellent album. My favourite of theirs is A New World Record. Every song could have been a single. Of course, the great lost album is the original double album version of Secret Messages. The single album version omitted great songs like Hello My Old Friend and Beatles Forever. Both would have been ELO classics had they been released at the time. Beatles Forever still remains unreleased and you can only hear a demo version on YouTube.
They were great. I was lucky enough to see the ‘Out of the Blue’ tour in 78.spaceship, lasers, the full nine yards at Wembley Arena. Not the best venue but they weren’t arf good. Lucky me.
One of my fave bands and Out of the Blue is a classic. A New World Record isn’t too shabby either.

Spot on, New World Record is fab, one of my favourite albums of all time, not a weak song on it. Makes for a tighter album keeping it as a single LP. Always thought "Out Of The Blue" rather too bloated, a few tracks did not deserve to make it. Never heard the "Beatle Forever" track before, reminds me a little of the Barclay James Harvest track "Titles" which has lyrics made up entirely of Beatles track titles and is a good listen. Probably prefer the earlier stuff rather than the electronic/disco phase. Always liked the rather quirky Eldorado rock opera album.

Shangri-la is a wonder album closer for ANWR
My Shangri-la has gone away, Faded like the Beatles on Hey Jude
Hello My Old Friend falls into the latter electronic phase of ELO but harks back to A Diary of Horace Wimp at the same time, with an I Am The Walrus vibe at the end. Crazy that it remained in the vaults for so long.

It is a fine song, quite an epic piece. I will have to play the whole of Secret Messages when I get a chance. I think falling out with Kelly Groucutt his onstage mini-me was a shame, they had really good musical rapport. And moving away from the strings also, the sound became possibly too contemporary and commercial under record company pressure. John Lennon was complimentary about ELO, as it did not obviously ape the Beatles, but was like a linear extension of the Beatles and saw how the Beatles might have progressed in similar ways if they had stuck together. Well it does ape their sound but with it's own identity if that makes sense. The chord changes on My Old Friend is very Walrus sounding as you say, intentionally done as the song is about harking back to another time.
