The favourite car you ever owned 22:05 - Nov 30 with 1875 viewsChurchman

In tribute to a couple of posters I’ve swapped posts with, what’s your favourite?

Not the best, most reliable, suitable, most flash, no rationale. Purely most important no reason, no judgement. The one that in your head you say ‘I wish I still had it’. I’ll go first. My thread, prerogative.

A late 1985 three door Toyota Corolla GT. not the coupe version. The boring hatchback one. Soooo dull. Red with black trim. Unassuming, quiet. Sunroof, cassette player, grey mouse fur interior. Big alloy wheels as standard, no power steering, nothing much at all really. Zzzz.

But open the bonnet and omg there it was. A twin cam dogs gonads engine held by strengthening bars. Hear it run, touch the throttle, but do it kindly. It was a work of art. It went like nothing else of its peers. Going round corners? Bit of a problem. But I adored how well engineered it was and how I could literally hit the floor with it in a way I can’t do now in my current car and it’d say to me ‘yeah, more please’.

Yet in the back the shopping, luggage, clubs went. Kindly Aunt one day, total monster the next. Loved it.

Ok, I’ve had a few beers and upbeat reminiscing, but for those who are interested in cars, even vaguely, which is the one?

A 1974 Gold Volkswagen Beetle. A car so good I bought it twice.

First time was when we had our first child and we were living in the sticks and both needed a car to get to work. It was so reliable, never let me down, even when l had to get in for early shift at 0600 with snow on the ground.

Sold it when second child was born and we moved into town. Regretted it but couldn’t afford two kids and two cars.

Fast forward 10 years, split up from wife, living alone. Searched eBay one night looking for cheap car and found the same beetle for sale 30 miles away. Went and bought it next day. Remember taking the kids out in it and telling the youngest what a toss-up it had been, either keeping her or the car!

Never once let me down in all the time l owned it. Loved that car.

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

Tough call between current BMW 330e, and my second car which was a dark blue 1965 Volvo 122s. The 122s took me to many a rave or club night in the mid 90s, so have very fond memories of it, despite the fact it was a total money pit.

The 330e is the first car that wasn't a hand me down and the first car I've owned since 2006. It's had absolutely no issues from the day it was delivered 3 years ago.

It’d be the Capri. But I would always regret it.

It’s probably better as a memory.

Nice to see you on here again

Are you on shore these days or still roaming the seven seas?

Ah I mostly lurk, I don’t have much to say about the football these days. It’s been so long since I’ve been to a match.

I’ve got 48 hours until I fly home for a couple of months, it’s been quite a rough trip. Dodging hurricanes in Asia soon gets boring.

I was drawn into the thread by my envy of Lagos and his Alfa. I knew you’d answer with a Land Rover, I do like a Triumph Herald. Always fancied one.

Hurricanes at sea sound terrifying, bad enough on terra firma!

Brilliant re the upcoming two months at home :)

Yep, Landies rule the world. Second biggest mistake of my life selling my last one cos the chassis had rotted, given how they're now the new gold bars of investment - could have had a new chassis put in for £5K & sold it for £10-12K minimum!

Nah, the TH is just a sentimental hark back to a golden year when I was truly happy,

Fav has to be that county model Defender90.

Been in plenty of Land Rovers. Never floated my boat, but I shall contradict myself and say I fully understand why it’s your favourite. They have something about them and if I had space, time and wanted to collect a few cars an LR (short wheelbase) would be one I’d buy.

My neighbour has a new one of those a Defender 90 2 door it’s the nuts …. However he had a 110 before that and his Daughter had a Range Rover, both took out the extra extra warranty cost over £1000 a year as at the particular time the engines were a bit pants.

Had to drive various LRs for a student job in the 90s. Lovely off the road and on a country track but sketchy as hell on a motorway.

The Defender was great for the work we were doing, way better than the Disco's they had.
