In advance of games I like to look at the opposing teams’ fans forums just to get a lowdown on how they view playing us. I know we have Blackburn to come next but I was looking at Sky Blues talk and saw this post discussing their lineup against us:

‘I'm not worried about the team we put out against them. They're not quick at the back and are slow going forward. Perfect opponents for the way we play.’

Another post says:

‘On the balance of things, they have better players but feel our team and team dynamic is much stronger. Lampard may even be a better tactician than McKenna too which I did not expect to say this season.’

I can’t disagree with either of those.

So, what I'm hearing here is that they're underestimating us and are a little over confident in the the abilities of The Famous One.

Excellent.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I am reading what I see our own fans saying about us.

The main redeeming feature is that we can play much better than that as well.

Anyone watching the Oxford match is likely to come to the conclusion given in the OP.

Admittedly it's clutching at straws a bit but I am really hoping a team coming to PR thinking we are there for the taking will be an open game and bring the best out of us.

Truly impaired.

As long as they aren't a well-organised team oozing confidence that has already scored 50 goals in just 18 matches!

They will be confident and so they should be. They are ten points clear, scoring a ton of goals and don't seem to miss players when they are unavailable.

That said, they will still respect us I imagine and I think next Sat may still be quite a cagey affair.

We really need to start getting the first goal in games. That's been our undoing on too many occasions. We dont seem to have the same resolve of two years ago and setbacks really seem to knock us off kilter for significant periods.

I wouldn't begrudge Cov promotion at all, certainly at least if we go up too. They've had a rough time since dropping out of the Prem even longer and more damaging than us between 2002 and last year.

The second quote quite telling, fair play to Lampard.

McKenna needs to re-invent himself or a system, football moves forward he hasn't.

In some ways would be typical Ipswich we lose tomorrow and then beat Cov 3-1 but can't say I am looking forward to this one, tomorrow night will be tough for different reasons too.

Really hoping 2026 can be a turning point.

I have always thought he is a better manager than most people give (or gave) him credit for).

He got CL football with a Chelsea team that had just lost Eden Hazard and were under a transfer embargo. He blooded a bunch of youngsters like Abraham, Mount, Guehi, Tomori, Lamptey (I can't remember if it was him that brought Reece James in). I wouldn't say that squad was in good shape when he took over and he couldn't buy anyone to fix the problems.

He kept a poor Everton squad up - experienced managers around that time (like Dyche) didn't achieve any more with that squad.

He took Derby to the Play off final didn't he? Lost to a superior Villa team from what I remember - ironically with Abraham upfront. Surely that's all that could be expected of him.

He has worked at clubs so far that have been in very testing circumstances to different degrees. Not had an easy time of it anywhere. Even Coventry were underperforming when he first went in.

He could have taken the lazy 'Super Sunday' outside looking in, critical route but he got in there and tried to make his mark as a manager. The 'Frank Lampard's....insert club name' line isn't his fault but it seems to be fading as a moniker now which may highlight that it's less show, more respect now.

I have lowered my expectations for both games. Blackburn will be out to prove a point and will be very much up for it, will we. Coventry are on a high and I don't think playing at Portman road will bother them at all.

It is the first goal thing that gets me. Such a poor record, and if teams know they can get that first goal we seem to be done for.

Our left side is so predictable now. Both Jaden and jack only cut in and both get shut out. We have created very little from either of them recently. The right is no better either. Interchange of players to maybe get to the byline and pull back might help.

To much possession based football is getting a bit like watching old Southampton. However we are in the top half and not really been playing that well or firing on all cylinders so cannot complain. Just would like to see a bit of a run put together as we seem to keep falling back just when you think we are getting somewhere.

Slow going forward yes, but wasn't Dara one of the fastest players in the top flight when at Burnley?

Indeed, not sure they're right on either front. We're not slow going forward when teams come and play against us, our quick transitions were what saw us beat Sheffield United 5-0. Inevitably play slows up when teams pack their penalty areas.

'Not quick at the back'

O'Shea was one of the fastest recorded players in the PL in 2023 and Davis is rapid as well, not that means they are great defenders

We haven't got any speedsters in the front four which is a gripe of mine

Jack Clarke does seem reasonably fast on the break but we do particularly appear to be be missing Burns

Ogbene was meant to be rapid but didn't look up to speed when we loaned him out

You'd hope do, but i wouldn't be surprised to see them park the bus and hit us on the break because we are essentially slow and they are quick.

They have longer to prepare for the match than we have.

I heard an interview with Frank Lampard on the radio and he said that the team were really together and he thought that was the reason for their success - he said sometimes he didn't need to tell them anything, as they just seemed to know what to do.

Philogene, Akpom and Walle Egeli are all pretty quick and Hirst isn't sluggish.

Akpom may well be quick but we have rarely got into positions to slip him in, I'm not convinced Walle Egeli is rapid but he is willing to take players on down outside which not all of our players seem willing to do so

McAteer maybe quick but he is one of the guiltiest of not using it down the outside
