| Christmas food 09:44 - Dec 2 with 825 views | MrPotatoHead | Dubtractor's chocolate thread has me thinking, what foods will people be treating themselves to over the festive period? I think I eat more cheese in December than the rest of the year combined. It's feeling like a Stilton year this year. | | | | |
| Christmas food on 09:56 - Dec 2 with 679 views | GlasgowBlue | Mince pies and Christmas pudding. Both with brandy extra thick cream. The taste of Christmas. I started on the mince pies yesterday and will have one a day throughout December. We are having a vegetarian Wellington this year for mains. Apparently one of my daughters is cooking a meat based alternative for all of our kids in protest. | |

| Christmas food on 10:27 - Dec 2 with 616 views | Churchman | Different cheeses (including a really good stilton) if I can find them and mini mince pies + cream. Chipolatas (somehow they taste different to proper sized sausages), stuffing. Twiglets from one of those drum things. I love Christmas pudding but Mrs C can’t eat it so I probably won’t bother with all the other stuff. Might treat myself to one of those mini ones. | | | |

You had me until the vegetarian Wellington. I'm sure it'll be nice but I make your daughter right, can't have a Christmas dinner without some meat. I'll join you for pud though.

Twiglets from the drum hit different. From a packet in July I wouldn't look twice at them, but at Christmas I need some in my life. Also see those Cheese bites, I'll be putting some of those out in a dish because its Christmas. Also agree on Chipolatas, I'll be sure to have some pigs in blankets too.

When I was a boy a jacket potato was something we had once a year on bonfire night. Usually cooked in the bonfire itself. Now I have a jacket potato at least once a week. Funny how food usually eaten at specific times of the year are now eaten regularly. Turkey being another example. Only ever saw it at Christmas, Now a Turkey, Brie and Cranberry panini is a regular menu staple.

I used to get a jacket potato once in a while at the Co-op café in Inverness but they've gawn and closed it down and used the space for franchises, retailing is gone... As far as baked potatoes go the best I have ever had were Christmas Day lunches at the ex's parents, they were the full Kilkenny. I don't know what fat was used (but it probably came from the Irish butcher in Barnet) to give the light coloured top and a gently browned bottom with the fluffiest of insides, however mashing up the boiled potatoes with carrots was less of a masterstroke. There was turkey and sausages wrapped in bacon as well, it wasn't a 95% potato Christmas lunch.

Same with me when it came to jacket potatoes, and when I was younger even chicken was a luxury that we only had on Christmas Day: roast beef, lamb and pork being presumably much cheaper for Sunday roasts. Indeed, I don't think we had a Turkey until I was about 15 from a farm on the outskirts of Ipswich which I remember visiting when they were still alive, although I can't quite remember whether you could "choose your own".
