my favourite batsmen of the 90's for England.

Could play but would take a hit also.

jeez sad news. RIP

he was superb to watch, in fact that England team was a great watch and this is from someone who for a couple of decades now, only watches England when they play Australia and no longer in addition to.

Ah, that's sad. Only 62.

Definitely one of the better parts of watching England in the early to mid-90s was Robin Smith.

Given the history of mental health issues for retired cricketers in particular, the thought that this may be another suicide is even sadder.

Sadly it sounds likely given his battles with alcoholism and depression. Very fine batsman, many good innings for England. One of the Gooch style upright batsmen with bat held high if I remember correctly.

Good interview with Lawrence Booth a few days ago. Spoke with the Lions, saw some old mates at the Test. Never realised he had such a battle with alcohol.

i'll never forget his innings against West Indies at Edgbaston, 2nd innings Ian Bishop hit him at least 4 or 5 times, i think he ended up not out for 40 odd and the rest of them got skittled.

A bottle of whisky a day normally kills you very quickly. Ouch.

if i remember correctly he was an expert at dealing with fast bowling but spinners troubled him whereas Graeme Hick was the opposite.
