This seems to be what most teams are doing to us now. Let us have the ball in the middle of the pitch as long as we want it. When we then want to get the ball into their area, they are invariably all be back in a park the bus defence, waiting for us to lose the ball and then bang, they attack us with pace, frequently scoring. The opposition can commit to the attack in numbers because, once we regain the ball we are so ponderously slow, their team can pretty much walk back into their defensive shape. Added to this we have many players not in their best/preferred position (Akpom 9, Egeli 10, Nunez central midfield, 2 strong LW's etc). I still say our great form for the double promotion was the Luongo, Morsy combo which was telepathic and creative. Once we decided to break that up we went back to the pre Luongo team - good but not a rocket ship. This is why Kieran is paid the megabucks for a championship manager, to fix this and hopefully it clicks very soon.

If McKenna is as good as we think he is, he needs to show that he can adapt and come up with ways to beat these teams. The boot is on the other foot now, we have probably the most expensive squad in the Championship so we are the big fish. That requires adaptation. In my humble opinion, we have lost the speed that we attacked with, I remember some of the goals we scored on the way up (Derby away, Barnsley away etc.) and these were so exciting, getting the crowd on their feet and the whole atmosphere being lifted, and some brilliant goals. Now it's all so ponderous. There is no telepathy on the right hand side, Egeli or MacAteer have to turn and face Furlong to have a pass made to them. We used to have Burns and Donacien just knowing when was the time for the pass. We are doing it on the left with Leif and Philogene, albeit Leif needs the LCB to cover for him when he goes up the wing. But its all about pace. We're too slow right now. [Post edited 2 Dec 11:08]

He simply has to find a more effective way of playing when teams are sat back, I think being promoted this year will come down to whether he is able to. Not saying it's as easy or simple as stick 2 up front, get the ball forward quicker, or whatever, or buy a creative midfielder in Jan type of solutions, but he is so wedded to the same formula that's brought so much success and it's not effective against low blocks.

Teams almost all defend deeper now and don't press us. We can't break and attack with pace, because teams are sitting back and letting us have the ball. Also, our play seems so backwards and slow. Not just us mind, but sometimes we can be pretty much in the oppositions corner, and work it back to our goalie......! Possession seems to be king but sometimes you just have to try and win a corner or something.
