The wry smile on his face after airing this said it all.

Presser by PhilTWTD 5 Dec 14:51
Can't let this become a narrative. Players read stuff, there are players who have made three, four five appearances. If you're an ITFC player, need to get behind them. If there's a narrative other than that, that's detrimental to the players. We'll pick the right team for the next six games in December and team will pick up good results.

Edit - The wry smile:

McAteer was hated the instant he signed by the usual gobsh1tes on social media, because of the fee (which has always been assumed as being £12m) and the fact he wasn't a "sexy" signing. I remember the comments.

The fact that he has started slowly (that's being generous perhaps) has basically made him scapegoat No 1, a guy next to me at the Wrexham game greeted him by shouting "You're fcuking shit McAteer" as he ran on....

Who needs rival fans when we have our own !

I can’t explain it, but there was SUCH a build-up of tension waiting to explode at McAteer’s first touch at Oxford… but it never boiled over, as he found his man with a pass.

Yeah, it's been bubbling up in the lower North all year tbh, worried this week that it is going to turn.

I haven't sensed that as much in the people who sit around me in the upper North.

Sorry mate, this isn't at you specially but this has annoyed me.

There is a time and a place for everything though when it comes to playing out the back. We had almost been caught out twice Tuesday trying to play out of the back in the slowest way possible. Was so easy to see exactly where the ball was going to go and Blackburn had to do almost nothing to pick the ball up in a very dangerous area, again.

This obviously followed new Morsy making a similar style mistake on Friday.

Time and a place on a tricky pitch, the right move at that point (no matter what you have been coached), is safety first.

Honest question, would you have been more annoyed with a few fans sarcastically cheered a long kick, or if we had tried to play it of the back again in the same slow sluggish way, and they had stolen it and scored? I know which one I would have been more annoyed at.

Now I am a massive fan generally of us playing out like that, it has worked for us so well over the last four years but it has become so slow and predictable it is now counter productive. Doesn't help when we have no width now so very few options.

Town players have got off very lightly having a fan base like ours. Others would have been wanting blood after the first 70 mins at Hull, Oxford and Blackburn. Fans are an easy target.

It's part of the risk and reward of that style of play. You will get mistakes. But you have to commit to it and you can't just rip up KM's style of play because of mistakes.

There was endless talk about it when KM first came here and he made the point that over time it will be worth it. He was right.

I remember that he made a big thing to the players of a fan in the north clapping that play when he was showing them video during a period when there were grumbles. He said that was a big moment - supoorters beginning to understand.

We seem to have lost that understanding since the success came

It's the same idiots screaming for Walton for stopping on the ball. They did the same to Woolfy.

So....I bit and I don't normally post/reply around things involving emotion and slightly more sensitive issues such as the OP but here's my twopenneth anyway

Firstly , I don't think anyone is beyond criticism in any walk of life of profession

That said I'm fortunate enough to have witnessed the "Bobby Years" first hand which in my eyes could BUT DOESN'T make me anymore entitled than the next man just because I've witnessed the glory days .

This word ENTITLED keeps popping up but I truly believe it's beyond that

OK so for me from 3pm right through to 4.45pm regardless of the performance however painful at times we should be getting behind the boys - regardless ! That for me is the definition of a "supporter " , you cheer , shout , scream , clap or however you encourage your team because ultimately you , I and the eleven starters go there on a Saturday to win a game of football . It's a common goal , we all want the same thing so we must all try our hardest

Now as I explained to Glassers the other night I'm quite a impatient guy by nature but when it comes to football and supporting this team for as many years as I have , I for some reason or other I'm very patient . Perhaps it's the years of brain washing over the years or perhaps realising there are more important things in life too , like my Grand Kids

All that aside , the boo-ing and slagging off players during a game ,for me , is a no no and it doesn't help anyone apart from the opposition.

The time for having a go is at the final whistle because no one IMHO is excluded from constructive criticism - it's how it's delivered isn't it ?

I guess the conclusion is and my opinion is , get behind the boys 100% during and thereafter .........

No one is excluded from being criticised or judged , not even KMcK and right now he has to find some answers to some very stiff questions

I wish I were there tomorrow , I truly do so I hope the "supporters" in this instance turn up and the "fan base" stay away

Patience is absolutely the word.

In the stands or on the forum, people are making such quick, damning judgements. Come on at half time, and you’ll see university dissertations on why we’re sh*t and going to lose.

I just think the risks outweigh the rewards at the moment. In the champ last time we would start these moves and would flow across the pitch and everyone can see the benefit of it. Now we do it and either get caught, or beat the press and then turn back and just play it back slowly and without purpose, allowing the opposition to get back into position anyway. Just negates the whole thing.

As I said before I am still a big fan if it’s done properly, we just seem too slow and sluggish about it all.

Maybe KM gently calling this out will help galvanize the fanbase. More likely it won’t. Better messaging might have been “we haven’t always clicked as well as we’ve wanted this season but we’ll keep working hard to do what’s right for this football club.” That I think would go across better than saying “if you look at metrics we’re mostly in the top two.”

The eyes see what they see; we’re not performing very well.

I second that emotion.

Follow the Town up or down.

Indeed, there have been far more downs than ups since 1986, so to be sitting at 7th at this stage of the season isn't as bad as many are making out.

The fundamental problem is nothing to do with playing out of the back, and the odd mistake that occasionally leaks a goal. If we were taking our chances at the other end, those few goals from mistakes would have not lost us points.

I think there are a couple of issues here.

The first is beating the high press, and in the last couple of games I feels that Walton has played some dangerous passes which have put the recipient under great pressure.

The second is what we do once the defenders have it nearer to the halfway line. In such a situation, we aren't necessarily under pressure but we are very ponderous. There is often an obvious pass to Davis or Furlong but we take an age to get it to them. And I do find Furlong a particularly frustrating player because his default pass is to play it back inside to O'Shea. I might add that Kipre on Tuesday played some very incisive forward passes but most of our passing from the back is not quick or incisive.

I might add that I watched the Spanish national team a couple of weeks ago, and their play at the back was light years ahead of ours with one touch passing and the like. Still, we clearly don't have players of that quality.

He missed a good chance but came quick on his wrong foot unfortunate otherwise would have been a hero and the monkey of his back,
Personally I like what he brings to the defensive side and really unlucky not to have assists there's been some good crosses where we have no striker busting a gut,
Yes I'm aware a few wayward crosses show me a winger that doesn't,
His price tag is what it is from a rival,
And it's only what it is with add ons and for leicester to get the full amount means we've been successful,

I'm not sure McKenna is so much p*ssed off with the fanbase, as concerned at the effect the prevailing mood-change could have (maybe is having) upon the players and the matchday atmosphere.

The fragility of supporter morale - from the high of finally beating Norwich to the plunge initiated by Oxford - can easily infect those on the pitch. Lack of raucous driving the team on, as we notably had during the promotion seasons. Players become more cautious, afraid to make mistakes and draw annoyance from the stands. Or get rid of the ball with more rapidity than care. Grumbling begets grumbling as negative play is reinforced by poor results.

It's not so much criticising as fighting to retain (regain?) a valuable element which helped propel us upward. With the team not yet firing consistently, Town need all the help we can get. Think of it in terms of a rallying cry, not McCarthy shouting "Fck off" at the fans.

Our season so far has been below expectations given our squad, transfer funds and potential. I don't think many see it any other way, with hope that the rest of the season with pick up and get to where we should be performing.

That's not what this thread is about - it's about the dreadful behaviour by some so-called fans, and how that can further impact the team's performance negatively.

If the behavior is abusing your own players on match day/social media and not getting behind the team in the stadium then I completely agree.

That's different from questioning squad rotation on a message board, I am assuming no one has an issue with that.

In fairness McKenna needs to take responsibility for that. It’s all right blaming fans, but if you’re going to produce a week as sh1t as he has in the context of this season, the loudest morons are going to make themselves heard.

He didn’t blame the fans, he asked for their support, rather than the bush1t negativity that’s become standard for too many on here, and in the grounds. In case anyone was in any doubt, what is posted on here gets an airing inside the dressing room, time for supporters to support.

Dreadful behaviour?

With negative football played at walking speed, a failure to convert chances and giving away kamikaze goals every week with the most expensive squad in the entire EFL its not hard to see why a gradually growing number of fans both online and in attendance are beginning to feel disgruntled.

For those apologists with blue-tinted glasses and happy clappers just ask any neutral to watch one of our matches and see what they say about the quality of our football at present. Or players who are supposedly singled out like McAteer and Hirst.

If McK is so thin-skinned then good luck with him going to another PL club or Celtic where vulgarities are hurled by large sections of the crowd throughout the match and at FT (West Ham, Wolves, Villa even his darling ManUre) or walk out when the club is losing even at HT (Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal etc.)

We have the most placid and easily satisfied fanbase by a country mile. Don't believe? Drop by King Power or St Mary's on matchday and see for yourself. Better still when they lose. Even Le Bris who now looks like a genius was called fking shit and useless last season by Sunderland fans when results weren't going their way
