Morning all
Just wondering if this happened to anyone else before. Lots of cars, including mine, parked on the verge next to Birkfield Drive (Chantry). Not on the pavement, so no obstruction. Got back after the game and have a PCN issued. Same for the car in front of mine. Others had already gone so couldn’t check if they had one too.
Been parking here before, always lots of cars doing it, but no ticket issued until yesterday.

There are double yellows on the road and the Ipswich Borough Council website says that a verge counts as part of the highway, which seems a bit odd.

Anyone else get a PCN there yesterday? Or have done before?
Thanks
Cheers

The council here take a hard line on verge parking especially over the winter when it gets churned up. You could try an appeal, but if the council regard the verge as part of the highway I suspect you are snookered.

This might just be the start of a council drive to get as many wardens out as possible on a match day.

Take a look at the Free Traffic Legal Advice forum - if there's any way to get you out of the ticket, they'll find it.

They got me off an otherwise open-and-shut bus lane offence in Greenwich a couple of years back, with the chap even going as far as to attend the tribunal on my behalf. All it cost me was a £10 contribution towards his train fare.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Used to park up there a few years ago, along with many others, before they planted loads more trees to reduce the verge, we came back to find every car ticketed, so there’s a precedent.

Sounded familiar. They have applied parking PCNs in 2022 and 2015. Might only be an occasional thing they do.

Surprised you have not been fined before. The council have been doing cars there for years. I thought they did this area every home game.

Tough luck, foot paths & verges are almost always regarded as part of the highway which runs from boundary marker to boundary marker.

Always seems unfair when something, ignored for ages, is suddenly enforced.

I hate seeing people parking on grass verges churning it up.

As others have said, the verge is treated as part of the highway so technically you were parking on a double yellow

Don’t always park there, but always go past on match days. Always lots of cars on the verge, would have thought there wouldn’t be if it was patrolled regularly.

Anyway, it looks like I’m bang to rights. Time to pay my dues.
Thanks for your help & comments all.
Won’t be parking there again!

A friend of mine lives in Bexley and the authority there is constantly giving out tickets for people parked on a pavement, even only a couple of wheels.
A couple of Orgs have tried to help fight the fines and failed every time - pavements are for people not cars.

I fully agree and I’d never park on a pavement. This was in the grass verge, completely clear of the pavement.

As a cyclist I fully support ticketing cars. I'd like to see them banned altogether. Maybe as a nation, we'd be a much healthier bunch.

Believe the rule is if there’s no path between the double yellows and the grass then you’re basically parking on double yellows.

As mentioned they planted a load of wild trees etc on the other side of the road years ago, that whole side used to be full with cars and that was ok as there’s a path between the road and verge.

You’ll always get tickets for parking up there on any verge that runs along double yellows. Bottom of the hill is fine, I have even seen people park on verge next to the bus lay-by at the bottom before the double yellows kick and get no tickets, that I thought was risky but always will get tickets on the verge that has double yellows. Pay the early fine as no getting out if that one and in future just park any where up Hawthorne drive verges as no yellows any where and same distance.
