January targets 15:30 - Dec 7 with 8604 views_CliveBaker_

We’re only a few weeks away from the window opening, anyone got any suggestions? Not positions but specific targets.

I wonder if Luke O’Nien will go out on loan, he’s barely played this season for Sunderland and his red card yesterday might well be him done there for this season. Could be a Travis type signing for us and I can see us wanting to strengthen in the middle to give Matusiwa a bit more cover. We’re short there and suspensions especially look inevitable. Experienced and a recent championship promtion under his belt too.

I think we’ll target a #9 as well but not sure who.

bit of a slap in the face for a very good professional. Expensive guy to de-register.

Why would it be a slap in the face for him if he is thinking about retirement in January rather than the end of the season?

Who was that Mexican CM who played a bit like Hackney?

Marcel Ruiz?

Hackney. I know it's unlikely and right now I wouldn't even bother BUT if we could now go on a run and draw at least level with Boro we have to try. Fully aware it's very unlikely and I don't mean we should spend the entire window trying to convince him. See where things are we play Cov on 29th and then ask his agent. If we get knocked back immediately or we don't have an answer within 3 days we move on. If Cov can be clawed back then Boro might even be up for it if they can strengthen multiple positions.

Another ST? Swap an RB for a back up LB if possible. Possibly a 10 unless Egeli gets moved there.

Hackney was our number 1 target in the summer (which shows that our scouting and judgement isn’t that bad!) but despite our best efforts he didn’t want to come. I really can’t see that anything has changed so think we have to let that one go.

I think Nunez can come good in the #10. What we really, really need (as we have just about every Jan window for the last 5 seasons!) is a CF. No idea who is on the radar though.

As I said, it's very unlikely for a number of reasons but worth trying against if we can climb above them. Especially if they have a little drop off in form. Not suggesting either are likely, just that it has to be attempted if there's even a slight chance.

I'm sure we can soon move on to the next target.

Truly impaired.

We're going to be hoping we go up, and Boro don't, before we go back for Hackney. I don't think we'll move on at all - it's very much our thing to go back for a player who we think is right for us.

I think we'll sign a cover DM, probably another CAM/CF, but it really will depend who is available - i can't see us pushing for people if we stay injury free and they don't improve us.

Hackney is the obvious right answer. But yes, highly unlikely unfortunately.

If we’d done our homework on Sindre at FC Nordsjælland, then hopefully we’d have also looked at Caleb Yirenkyi. Centre mid, just about linked with every top European club.

Think the ship may have sailed with Yirenkyi.

Saw the scout list for a Nordsjælland game last week, featured the like of Liverpool, Dortmund, Tottenham, Bayern.

You can see why they'd want him, he looks rapid in the middle of the park

That would be another record Championship fee

Don't really understand this.

If you're after Manhoef are you dropping Philogene, Clarke or Egeli? He's got less goals and assists that Philogene and Clarke and Egeli is getting better every game.

Just doesn't make sense to me.

I'd love us to go and get Harrison Reed from Fulham either on loan or permanent. We wanted him in the summer and he has barely played this season.

Gelhardt would fit the profile of player we like too.

I have a feeling that Egeli will eventually be moved into the 10, could also see Burns allowed to leave on loan. Agree though, another winger certainly isn’t a priority right now, but just someone that I could see us like.

Cozier-Duberry another one I think we’ll be watching, we have a good relationship with Brighton, if they want him higher up the pyramid.

Why on earth would we want a player here who doesn’t want to be here. The M’boro bloke Hackney said no thanks in the summer so look elsewhere.

I’d bring Chaplin back in as he offers something a little different to what we have.

I’d also look for a centre forward, possibly somebody young. A prospect rather than a hasbeen. Who? No idea.

I’d actually be ok with us leaving the squad well alone. We’ve had too much change in the last few transfer windows - but I guess thats one of very many reasons why I’m not a football manager.

I don’t think we will need to pay him off, there’s plenty of others who can create the squad room. Button could be one if we register an U21 keeper and Clarke is almost a given. If it’s to sign a CM then Humphries is also a very easy 1 in, 1 out. I don’t think squad places will be a problem at all.

I've heard Humphries has handed in a transfer request.

Van Ewok (or something) looked half decent for Cov yesterday.

He's the league's premier right back.

Don't see people jumping off the Coventry express personally. Ask Cov fans who their key player is and they'll mostly say Grimes. It's the other man in the double pivot, Victor Torp, also adored, younger (26), who sits atop the big analysis sites as the best player in the league this season (ranked 1st or 2nd).

Victor's chief rival, ranked 1st or 3rd, also 26 years old, also plays in central midfield, is Imran Louza. He's been mentioned on here before, cost Watford £10m maybe a few years ago, and is the least fanciful of top performing midfielders in this league if we want to shop in this league, imo. That's also if we want to try to improve the middle this season, rather than just add cover for Matusiwa. I don't see Hackney prospects having improved; they've got worse imo. Maybe keep some powder in reserve for the summer if we achieve our goal.

Onto bolstering our 10 slot, Championship focus only, overlooking Coventry and Southampton players, the best central performer in the league this season is Anis Mehmeti. Soon to be 25 years old, out of contract in the summer.

Hopefully our betters are looking beyond the walls of the Championship though lol as well as inside them.

The first and second paragraphs contradict themselves

You think we should leave Hackney alone as he doesn't want to be here, in actual fact, my understanding is that he was very keen on joining but his agent talked him out of the move as they were expecting a move to the premier league to materialise at that point, the move did not happen

I love chappers, but didn't he push for the move to Pompy, understandable being his boyhood club, but you could argue he wanted out, much in the same way as Broady so why would you have Chappers back if he didn't want to be here?

The optics of not signing anyone won't work for the club to the fans though.

Shown as having 'lack of ambition' or something.

I do think we'll sign a couple, probably a high-profile loan in there but we don't need a lot

If that's true, and hopefully the club wouldn't stand in his way unless there is a real intent to use him, we would then need a plan for the EFL club developed Rule i.e. either Baggott on the bench, or one fewer sub named on a match-day.

Does anyone know the rule re Harry Clarke? In view of time spent elsewhere, does he still count as "club developed"?

At a slight tangent to this, watching Simms in the first half on Saturday I'm still surprised we didn't try and buy him for £10m at the start of last season, or even this one, given he's a player we clearly like and provided an excellent focal point in that half.

He was less effective once we had the lead but that went for a lot of the Coventry team.

Obviously no chance he'll be leaving Coventry given where they are at the moment.

Conor Chaplin, who cannot get into the Pompey team struggling at the bottom of the league? I think we need much, much better. Both he and Burns are being romanticised from what they did a year ago...time is catching up with them both, both in terms of fitness and pace and quality.

Bit harsh on Burns. Maybe let him kick a ball post-injury before we comment on his quality
