January targets 15:30 - Dec 7 with 8554 views_CliveBaker_

We’re only a few weeks away from the window opening, anyone got any suggestions? Not positions but specific targets.

I wonder if Luke O’Nien will go out on loan, he’s barely played this season for Sunderland and his red card yesterday might well be him done there for this season. Could be a Travis type signing for us and I can see us wanting to strengthen in the middle to give Matusiwa a bit more cover. We’re short there and suspensions especially look inevitable. Experienced and a recent championship promtion under his belt too.

I think we’ll target a #9 as well but not sure who.

Franculino from Midtylland has the kind of profile we might want. Came through at Benfica, looks like he's going to cost a lot no idea if that's where we gamble though.

A goal every 74 mins in the league apparently. Which means he will go to a giant club and be loaned out most likely.

Not sure if Sindre will have any suggestions from that league, but wouldn't be adverse to shoping there again.

This fella is out of contract this summer apparently so maybe we go back for him? https://www.footballfancast.com/ipswich-town-chiefs-make-enquiry-sign-physical-1

In all seriousness, I'd hope we play it safe and players like O'Nien would do nicely. Harrison Reed would be perfect as he's not getting a game this season. It's a shame we probably can't stretch to players like Frank Onyeka is still getting a game at Brentford, he'd be the kind of defensive midfielder to control games too.

Franculino's Guinea Bissau have qualified for AFCON which might mean that he wouldn't be available for a large chunk of January. Looks a bit beyond our means anyway.

O'Nien or Reed would probably be good in central midfield.

I don't think we need to be trying to incorporate that many new players in January. McKenna should be able to make something decent out of what he has, although a couple of positions do need cover.

If that's true, and hopefully the club wouldn't stand in his way unless there is a real intent to use him, we would then need a plan for the EFL club developed Rule i.e. either Baggott on the bench, or one fewer sub named on a match-day.

Does anyone know the rule re Harry Clarke? In view of time spent elsewhere, does he still count as "club developed"?

We didn’t have Humphreys or Baggott on the bench Saturday and still named 9 subs?

The Club developed player only needs to be named in the season's squad, not in the match day squad.

The first and second paragraphs contradict themselves

You think we should leave Hackney alone as he doesn't want to be here, in actual fact, my understanding is that he was very keen on joining but his agent talked him out of the move as they were expecting a move to the premier league to materialise at that point, the move did not happen

I love chappers, but didn't he push for the move to Pompy, understandable being his boyhood club, but you could argue he wanted out, much in the same way as Broady so why would you have Chappers back if he didn't want to be here?

Is that your understanding or interpretation? Not digging you out but think there is a big difference so would like to know which?

At a slight tangent to this, watching Simms in the first half on Saturday I'm still surprised we didn't try and buy him for £10m at the start of last season, or even this one, given he's a player we clearly like and provided an excellent focal point in that half.

He was less effective once we had the lead but that went for a lot of the Coventry team.

Obviously no chance he'll be leaving Coventry given where they are at the moment.

Totally agree with you there. Thought he was a real handful for those first 30 minutes. To be fair to O’Shea and Kipre, they had his card marked the rest of the game, but could definitely see why we were so keen on him a couple years back.

Hackney would be a real asset in this team, I'm gutted we missed out on him beforehand, but I think it'd be a real stretch now to get him over the line in January.

I think we'll be looking at a PL loan.

Harrison Reed is a good shout, doubt he'd come as cover for Matusiwa though. Would be them together.

Means the 10 would need to be more mobile.

He'll be ready to play come mid Jan.

Chelsea will be fed up with him and don't seem set up to play to his strengths anyhow. Most of their fans are saying "send him back to Ipswich"

He could use a half season of regular starts to get up to scratch again, then back to a 'big' PL team for a second crack if not with us.

Does Joe Gelhardt have a leeds recall option in jan... wonder if we might go in for him

Always thought we'd go for him at some point after being linked a while back. Could work well if Egeli moves central.

Yeah, he wasn’t a serious suggestion per se, just a who else is out there.

In the same vein if we go back to Mexico, there’s a Spaniard called Fidalgo who is supposedly an excellent midfielder. Up there with Ruiz, was discarded at Real Madrid and a bit of a Cinderella story over there.

I wonder if this summer sees us go more exotic again and try and show we want to give the prem a proper go if we go up.

Many rungs between us and there though should Maresca cool on him. If he's transitioned from starter to sub to outside the Chelsea setup by January, next could come mid-table PL, lower PL, Europe, Strasbourg before us. Would be such a steep fall for the fella that I'd fear his mind wouldn't be in the best place tbh.

He's good enough to play in that league from what I saw last season.

I think he put on a good show against us when we both played, pretty much pointing out to us what we were missing.

Luke O Nien is a fantastic shout.

Don't suppose Solanke is realistic but that would be an excellent signing

Could we try for Marc Guiu again?

Not beyond the realms of possibility Sunderland will take a look at Jack Clarke in January.

How much, plus Luke O'Nien, would we take? £35 million?

O'Nien is a good character and a good player for this level (not better than starters we have imo), but he's also a CB. I'm not sure why he's described as a defensive midfielder in his bio. Maybe he played there in lower leagues.

Only once in midfield in the Championship, in 2023 against QPR. Tbf that's one more time than I would have guessed. See on inspection now that he played much of their 21/22 League One campaign in midfield, hadn't appreciated that and explains the bio.

Mid January is very optimistic for a dislocated shoulder. Depends on what damage will have been caused. A couple of months for a straight forward dislocation is normal (non contact sport) - when I did mine I needed over 6 months of physiotherapy to get it right.

I've heard Humphries has handed in a transfer request.

The other day someone said he was happy here even not playing much as he loves training under McKenna.

Not suggesting I believe either, but at least one is wrong.

Truly impaired.
