January targets 15:30 - Dec 7 with 10506 views_CliveBaker_

We’re only a few weeks away from the window opening, anyone got any suggestions? Not positions but specific targets.

I wonder if Luke O’Nien will go out on loan, he’s barely played this season for Sunderland and his red card yesterday might well be him done there for this season. Could be a Travis type signing for us and I can see us wanting to strengthen in the middle to give Matusiwa a bit more cover. We’re short there and suspensions especially look inevitable. Experienced and a recent championship promtion under his belt too.

I think we’ll target a #9 as well but not sure who.

The other day someone said he was happy here even not playing much as he loves training under McKenna.

Not suggesting I believe either, but at least one is wrong.

I’m interested to know what our thought process is with Baggott and Humphrey’s, because let’s face, they’re never going to be regulars here. That’s not a fault of them, the club has moved at such a pace these past few years that they’ve been left behind a little. Yet we keep offering them contracts and opted to keep them around the squad this season.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

I think it’s because of the club developed player rules. We need to have at least one or only name 8 subs.

Also pretty sure that rule doesnt apply in the premier league.

I am definitely not saying it is true, merely that someone at the game Saturday told me he had.

Are they both two injuries from meaningful minutes?

Humphreys was a very late sub before Cajuste got up to speed. We saw with Azor's suspension that McKenna preferred a full match from Nunez. Presumably he'd prefer that from Taylor too, but thoughts may change for a longer injury and multiple midweeks. My hunch is that despite Nunez's productivity further forward, McKenna would sooner still use Nunez to plug a CM gap, another attacker to plug a Nunez gap, rather than keep Nunez higher and bring in Cam sooner.

Presume Kipre would move across for an injury to O'Shea. If two go down then maybe a fitter Harry Clarke would fill in, maybe Furlong move across, but it could be Baggott. That's the playing pathway I think - it definitely happens but hopefully not to us.

On development, is it better to train among a high standard 4-6 days a week, with better coaching and equipment, or to drop X levels on that front but play regularly on Saturdays? I know the elite clubs often prefer to nurture their best in-house, at the expense of "battle-hardening" elsewhere. I'd be very curious to know if Humphreys is regressing, stalling or improving with us after his breakthrough season. I wouldn't be confident in guessing there, much as I agree with you that their careers lie elsewhere as starters.

Lastly, I don't think a squad is fully considered without a 5th CM, a 4th CB etc.. Maybe those two aren't the right profile, despite sub-rule advantages for us, but we do need players who will only feature if bad luck strikes, and we could do with those players being as good as finances and squad harmony allow.

Luke O Nien is a fantastic shout.

Don't suppose Solanke is realistic but that would be an excellent signing

Could we try for Marc Guiu again?

Might never be regulars, but a couple of injuries at CB or CM and they're right there and ready to go, well steeped in the way we play, and we're confident they'd be able to do a job in the Championship.

From a club point of view, it's a happy situation, but if either of them want to move on you'd understand it.

At a slight tangent to this, watching Simms in the first half on Saturday I'm still surprised we didn't try and buy him for £10m at the start of last season, or even this one, given he's a player we clearly like and provided an excellent focal point in that half.

He was less effective once we had the lead but that went for a lot of the Coventry team.

Obviously no chance he'll be leaving Coventry given where they are at the moment.

I thought he was dreadful tbh. Hes just a lump.

Rubin Colwill at Cardiff looks a real talent, not sure of the speedsters about, that could be a striker or a winger

I can't see us going for another winger with the four we have currently and Burns potentially on the come back

The other position is another central midfielder to back up or play alongside Taylor or Matusiwa, particularly if Nunez is playing 10

Could we see the depature of a bigger name if another 10 is lined up?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
