Hirst should definitely have got a second yellow but the ref bottled it. I think that he started booking players too early and for too little, it was always going to cause him problems later on. I think we got 5 or 6 bookings in total in a game that wasn't dirty and there was not much time-wasting (apart from Cov being slow to take throw ins in the 1st half).
Interestingly, watching the reply, I also think the officials messsed up by giving the offside in the Hirst non yellow card incident. He was clearly on side, Sindre was in an offside position but not interfering with play in any way :/ |  | | |

I did think the ref was very card happy too, in a game that barely had a bad challenge in it. |  |

I've watched the game again. It was literally Hirst's first challenge and the player was clever to run across him to 'win' a foul...it's what all decent players do, so was unfortunate to get a yellow immediately.
Then, there's a definite question mark on him being offside, Egelli was deinitely offside and right in front of the linesman, so influlence there to a decision imo.
Finally, i've watched it 15 times and cannot hear the refs whistle.
The Coventry yellow was completely different too as Eccles was probably booked for dissent as much as the kicking the ball and was right next to the ref, Hirst was 50 yards away from him.
So. Context.

In reality he didn't need to book the Coventry player, in which case no one would have made anything of Hirst not getting one. Both cases came when the score was 0-0, no one was genuinely time wasting (they were making the game slow but you wouldn't call it time wasting), he only gave it because the whole North Stand demanded it.
Ironically, had Hirst picked up the second yellow you could make an argument for it being our own fault for making such a fuss of their one. |  |

At last... you are quite right, Hirst was not offside ahead of the incident that could have led to his 2nd yellow. I sit in SAR Upper, and, at the time, I was quite sure that Hirst timed his run from the far side of the defender perfectly. Our players appeared to appeal when the Coventry player got booked for kicking the ball away. The ref made a rod for his own back by booking the player. Whether he was influenced by the Town players is irrelevant. He's in charge.
As for Lampard wanting a player sent off then that lowers my opinion of a once great player showing the pressure on all managers these days. Not a huge setback for Coventry and as with us it's what you do in the next game.
Once a ref books a player he has then put himself in a position where 9 times out of 10 he will have a decision to make later in a game.
All players no matter whose team they belong to should be sent off for offences that put another player in danger of serious injury, but often we see players sent off for two fairly innocuous offences. Not only does that put one team at a serious disadvantage but also ruins most game as a spectacle. | | | |
