Heading back to suffolk tomorrow, on Thursday we're day drinking in Bury with lots of different friends.
So best traditional proper pubs please that are open all day,comfortable, good drink selection and preferably a decent atmosphere( obviously more difficult on a Thursday afternoon!) Its been so long, the only pub names i can remember is the Nutshell!

Dog & Partridge near the Greene King brewery is a good, traditional pub.
The Fox has recently had a facelift, can cut through Abbey Gardens to get there which is a nice stroll
Cannon Street Brewery is decent, it’s a microbrewery and they’ve got some good beers and decent outside space (maybe not a factor this time of year though) |  | | |

The Rising Sun has recently reopened on Brentgovel Street and that's a great traditional boozer, lots of good beers.
If you're on the train then definitely stop at the beerhouse just down the hill from the station on the way in to town.
The Masons Arms and the Dog and Partridge are both good old fashioned pubs too | | | |

Agree with other responses. Old Cannon may be busy with Christmas work lunches - I walk past it most days and lunchtimes are getting busier.
Nethergate Tap now opens Monday and Tuesday up to Christmas, until 6pm. Probably best kept beer in Bury and certainly cheapest outside Wetherspoons. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the One Bull is decent, good Brewshed beers and a good space for those not eating. If you are eating, the Mason's Arms is a very good bet. |  |

That's why I didn't recommend the One Bull. I have nothing against it but its more of a restaurant you can have a drink in than a pub you can eat at these days, IMO. | | | |

and yet the Corn Exchange is the best Wetherspoons in the country, so youll be missing out.
but there you go open all day and Bury arent phrases that go together with many pubs there, certainly not the good ones. as Id have said try the Dove, but its only open from 5pm on a Thursday & Friday. Or the Beerhouse, only open from 5pm on weekdays.Rose & Crown only from 330 till 9pm. Hopsters only from 5pm on a Thursday, Vespers closed Monday & Tuesdays ...are you spotting the pattern yet ?
Oakes barn is open all day, as is the Old Cannon but the rest if you are insisting on missing the Spoons, are just varying degrees of Greene King pubs.

Bury St Edmunds Wetherspoons was voted the 2nd best in the country. It's very nice there, lovely old restored building, it's where the old Corn Exchange used to be, upstairs. Would probably get rave reviews if it wasn't a Wetherspoons. Are going to the game on wednesday Dan? [Post edited 8 Dec 18:45]

I'd agree with pretty much all of that as another craft beer w@nker, other than I prefer Hopsters to the Rising Sun as they have a much better selection of fresh / new beer. They have amazing pizzas in Hopsters too which further helps tip the scales in their favour.
I'll always have a soft spot for the Beerhouse too, spent countless hours in there over the years & their own craft beers have improved a lot over the last couple of years. | | | |

Yeah sorry, hopsters is the best for me by far, and the pizza is sublime (not on a Thurs OP). Rising Sun is prob the best option for the OPs requirement - good beer, but also traditional setting and a bit less beer w@nkery than our tastes 😁 | | | |
