What Is worst ground in professional football you have been to and why 00:10 - Dec 9 with 3697 viewsChurchman

Any reason. With the FA Cup Third Rd beckoning, I’m just curious.

My choice is Eastville 1985. FA Cup game, snow everywhere, cold as hell. The ground had partially burnt down, bits of it were miles from the pitch and the large portaloo tank behind the stand we were in had a lake of p£ss in it which people outside were making waves with by rocking it up and down.

Eastville aspired to be a dump. Dreadful and the cold just finished it off. Fortunately we won 2-1 with a late goal on the icy field imitating a pitch and we were never more glad to clamber back into my Vauxhall Nova, which had a working heater! Hurrah.

Swindon 1999.

We took a few that day and they opened the stand behind the goal to accomadate us.
I seem to recall there was no running water and certainly no refreshments!
We won 6-0 though, so not a bad day out overall!!!

A special mention to Barnsley.
Not so much the ground, but the fact my mate's car had the window smashed and stereo nicked.
A long, cold, mid winter drive home ensued!

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Layer Road always springs to mind when I went in 2006.

I mean, it wasn't a great ground but that place rocked on a Friday night!

As crappy as it was, as a place to stand and watch football right on the touchline, it was hard to beat.

Luton isn’t great the toilets are awful.Posh wasn’t great when they painted the toilet walls half hour before they let us in.I still prefer the older stadiums though.

It does make me smile though walking up the steps to the stand at Luton and you can see right into peoples kitchens etc.

I saw someone mention Colchester,I liked Layer Road much better than this newer out of town stadium,I’m not a fan of out of town stadiums.

After a few jars and a dodgy burger who cares 😂👍

Agree with you, I love the characterful older grounds plonked in residential areas. Couple of boozers on the corners of the streets nearby, proper 4 stand stadiums, walking distance to public transport.

Very little enjoyable about a flat pack stadium stuck on the side of an A road miles from the actual town.

I agree, but the old stadium was a potential fire hazard.

In the late 50s Colchester were vying for promotion with us. We played them on Easter Monday. 18,000:inside Layer Road, absolutely rammed. It was a dreadful 0-0 draw, and Benny Fenton missed a penalty.

Ninian Park was very run down and tatty, but a grand old ground in other ways. The new Cardiff stadium is bad in the other direction - identikit concrete bowl with little atmosphere and terrible traffic.

I’m not sure how they’ve managed to screw the traffic up… given that it is on the plot of land opposite the old ground.
I guess people park in the club car parks now and take an age to get out.

It's tricky because worst is actually best.

The more old school, run down, decrepid and leaking the stadium the more I love it. Whereas the soulless bowls being mentioned are actually some of the most comfortable but the least I look forward to attending.

So depends on what is meant by worst.

The question was very open ended for precisely what you said in your last sentence. Worst means different things to different people.

For instance, Southampton’s St Mary’s is light years better than the old Dell in every way but one. It’s utterly soulless so on that basis I preferred the old Dell, however decrepit and peculiar it was.

Plainmoor (Torquay) was pitiful but it had a charm to it and I enjoyed going there a few times.

Watford 1992? The stench of decay, p£ss, stale booze and body odour was so bad we edged to the side of the stand. Lost a chunk of the pitch but at least breathing was back on. Somehow, Vicarage Rd in those days was atmosphere free as well as a dump so it’s 1992 version is in my top worst five.

For me it’s the Dell. Will always remember having to stand behind a floodlight pylon while Alan Shearer was banging in a hat trick for them. Probably just as well I had a rubbish view 😂😂

not quite with the topic in question... but i would put oxford as my most recent worse stadium, out of town, soulless ,only 3 stands, away area is just steel and block work, unfinished in the concourse, no lights , stood in water on the terrace whole game, and we lost .....

Oxford's Kassam stadium is rubbish. Although for conferences, it's an alright space. Had my Covid jab there a while back!

Stamford Bridge for conferences 10 years ago wasn’t alright, unless you like being bored to tears while enjoying the stench of sewage.

Anybody go to Brighton’s old Goldstone Ground? Right old pigsty. We lost as well.

Yes, it's the roads round about which are the problem. Get clogged up quick and slow to clear. Everyone coming out of the big car-park at the ground overloads things fast.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I'd agree with that. Pitch felt miles away due to the running track, temporary stand and facilities, no roof (at least it didn't rain when I was there).

I did meet Des Lynam and Jimmy Hill after the match though!
