Do also think Coventry will begin to fade away soon though, if they lose 2 or 3 in a row for example all of a sudden that gap at the top of the league is almost gone and the pressure ramps up for them.
| Our main rival for 2nd place.. on 17:09 - Dec 9 with 1634 views | Radlett_blue | Kind of interesting that Southampton have rallied after parting company with Will Still. They have given interim manager Tonda Eckert the job permanently, although he looks, on paper, an even riskier appointment than Still. Come the end of the season, we shall see how "permanent" he is. Southampton do have decent players, so this could be a sustainable run. Will also be interesting if Coventry do fall off their perch. The rest of this League looks even more inconsistent than us so an automatic spot is up for grabs if we can just find more consistency as we do have better players than most of this League. | |

I know they had a couple of players out, but I was expecting a bit more from Coventry on Saturday if I'm honest. They didn't exactly ask lots of questions of our back 4, for a team that has scored 50 goals already. I know there have been a few comments about the benefit of squad rotation too, but they really did look cooked towards the end of the match.

We don't know if the Coventry bubble will burst, but that's out of our control. I reckon 90pts will be enough for automatic promotion so we need a marginal improvement in the second half of the season. I think we need another striker (I'd bin Akpom) but we don't need a huge amount of improvement to do it, just more consistency & our deep squad should help us in the second half of the season.

2 points a game from this point gets us to 85. We're currently running at 1.63 for the season, and 1.8 over the last 10. 7 games up to Pompey on Jan 4th. We could really do with 15+ points (5 wins) (I'm a bit worried about Leicester on Saturday, but if we can get a result there, then I think we hit that target)

The situation at Coventry is interesting. Next door neighbour but one is a Sky Blue and, therefore, we talk football and we both spend a bit of time watching each others teams. Whilst Coventry have gone off like a steam train. Recent performances have seen this ship a lot of goals, often conceding first but getting themselves back into matches. I've felt they were due a loss and we were due a performance - the two coincided at the weekend. What's interesting speaking to my Sky Blue neighbour is that many Cov fans are critical of Lampard. Lampard has set them out as a really attacking team but many fans feel he leaves them wide open to a counter attack or open to any team with a half decent attacking group. A lot of talk about them being 'found out' of late - which does coincide with injury and availability issues but that speaks to a wider problem at Cov - squad depth and rotation (or lack thereof). I'll call it now. They won't get automatic promotion and I would not be at all surprised is Lampard is out of job if they don't get promotion.

Yes, we need to improve & this season has been such a mix of good, indifferent & poor performances that I'm still utterly unconvinced that we will do so. We've seen some false dawns & then a good performance last Saturday after a couple of shockers.

Will Still really did not look like he had a clue. Van Nistelrooy had a good start at Leicester but faded fast, could happen at Southampton too.

Van Nistelrooy's "good start" lasted 2 games - a home win over West Ham & a draw at Brighton, before 8 consecutive losses, in none of which Leicester managed even a single goal.

Still yet to play tonight's game but apparently only a point behind us after it. And yet they could be as much as 7 points behind us after tomorrow's (I don't think they will be, though)!

They’ll batter West Brom, they are truly awful. Will Still was always an odd appointment, was clearly way, way out of his depth. I still, think Coventry will win the league and if we finish above Southampton, we’ll be second.

Just got to do no more than 3 points worse than Soton then! I think there is far too far to go to state any of those things. (Apart from Still being a poor appointment.) Coventry have been fantastic for 18 matches but a season is 46 matches long and their squad looks thin.

They've a small squad by comparison, hence two keepers on the bench on Saturday. Can see them being pulled back into the pack as the likes of us, Southampton and probably Sheffield United get stronger and more consistent.

Tbf their underlying stats have always been quite good- in many ways just a more extreme version of our season so far.
