Jens Cajuste would be better for us next season… 19:40 - May 5 with 5808 viewsSitfcB

…as he was last season, it’s weird but probably he suits the Premier League better? He was a standout performer.

Would a starting midfield pairing of him and Matusiwa be acceptable?

If we could find a 25 year old Sam Morsy style player, I'd take that.

All this chat about him being injury prone but he hasn't had an injury whilst he was here has he? If he has, he has missed very few games.

I think he's had such a poor season this time around we will just look somewhere else. He was good last time out but think we will assess other options.

In what way was he good in the EPL?

1 goal, 1 assist. Poor in the air, can’t tackle, rarely tracked back. What did he offer us that was good? Was he not a part of a joke of a midfield?

You really think that KM is the kind of manager who would bad mouth him in public?

Kieran's comments were almost agent-like, rather than insinuating we were desperate to retain him.

KM, for all his diplomacy, says what he means.

If he means it, we'll be signing him permanently and taking up our option within a matter of hours then, won't we?

Poor old Morsy had to do the role of 1.5 players in that pivot last season!

Not necessarily. There will be a lot of factors. But there's no doubt he rates him.

Yes. The main factor being he's not a good fit for our team. That's all there is to it. He'll go on to have a decent career elsewhere.

So Jens gets the benefit of the doubt And yet we have a high quality goalkeeper we have decided to bin because us fans have decided is rubbish! ... Maybe we all need to give him (Muric) another chance assuming we will be a bit more pragmatic about the playing out from the back as we became during this season. Trying to draw Man City onto you at their place maybe not the cleverest idea!

He was fantastic in many games.

He ran the game against Spurs away.

Think we've forgotten how good he was!

Absolutely not. I don't know where this concept that Cajuste was "standout" in the PL last time. In 24/25, like 25/26, he had a decent highlight reel, but strip back the layers and he produced what? 1 goal and 1 assist?

No ta.

This.

Totally ineffective aside from the one trick he has in his locker, which is receiving the ball on the turn. Not fit enough either.

Would be gutted if we sign him tbh.

Completely agree. I've no idea why so many thought he was so good in the Premier league.

He left Davis constantly exposed (one of his jobs was to fill the gap when Davis went forward, as Luongo did and Taylor has this season). His signature move was to break free and drive forward which, to be fair, he was good at. But I can't remember a single telling pass or shot coming from one of those moves. So, that looked nice but was ineffective.

What else did he do?

I will never ever understand the notion that a player can cut it in the Premier League but not in the Championship.

If you are capable of playing in the best and most competitive league in the world you are able to play well vs Bristol and Preston.

If we got the 24/25 version, that's a no brainer. But so was Phillips if we were looking back to the 2020-22 period .... sadly we only got a slightly better version of him than the one at West Ham. Depends what we can get him for really.

I think a Cajuste in an advanced role without the need to get back would suit the prem

But seeing he can't do more than 5 minute spells through games, i can't see him working in our 2

Top, top player.

You don't get to Napoli if you're not.

No helping anyone who doesn't understand he was one of our best players last PL season.

No, I admit I don’t understand. What part of one assist and one (consolation) goal made him one of our best players? Little tackling, tracking back, heading or goal attempts either. Even if as has been suggested he made starts and wasn’t injury prone, how many games did he play 90 mins?

How many this season? One goal, three assists, minutes on the pitch 1190 mins equating to 13.22 games.

If we are serious about competing at all we need more than that, however graceful he is on those rare occasions. One TWTD MoM v Derby this season. Whoopee.

Move on imo. No room for sentimentality and it’s a bit of a myth that it’s an easier league physically. There’s less time on the ball, it’s quicker and players run at least as much. It’s just that there are fewer games, but Jens wasn’t close to hitting PL numbers this year. We need to aim high and for much better (imo of course).

Not for me, the guy couldn't get a kick this season, didn't even make the match day squad on occasions.

Think we can spend that money far better elsewhere.

He might be better for us next season.... and he'll still be not good enough.

He truly wasn't that good enough in the PL. Our midfield got ripped apart every week.... so why did Cajuste get a free pass and Morsy get all the blame? 1 goal, 1 assist. We were a very poor side.

This season, we learnt that a lesser technically gifted player like Taylor can be far more useful to us than a showpony. So why not learn and try and bring in someone who's an upgrade on Taylor. We're going to need guts and determination as well as skill and Cajuste hasn't got that.
It's perfectly possible to have a passenger or a show pony in a team.... but they've got to contribute more than 1 goal and assist a season. Nice looking footballers don't always mean the best footballers.

I'd rather we didn't. I think Matusiwa is good enough if we combine him with someone of equal quality and possibly experience so he doesn't have to do it all on his own.

Someone as proper backup as well so he's not having to be flogged for a whole season.

Cajuste strikes me as a player who'd do well in La Liga or Primera Liga but isn't suited to the Premier League. Technically decent but doesn't have the physical attributes required.

I don’t buy into that. Genuine prem players can play in the championship no worries. It’s like saying Zidane wouldn’t get a game for Achilles.

Regardless of who we sign, we were getting overrun with the 2 pivots in the Prem last time. Morsy had the physicality, but not the pace - I think Taylor could offer more this time around after the improvement he's shown this season (although I think he'd have to reign in his old-school tackling!), I don't think we got enough from Cajuste off the ball, and Phillips played most of his games looking like a player shot of confidence.

We ended up pushing Nunez into the 10 role as we struggled with him in the pivot role earlier this season; think Cajuste would actually be a better 10 for us in the Prem, as he's stronger in possession, has a bit more composure on the ball, and better vision / execution of a final pass. We'll probably need less workrate off the ball (which Nunez is better at) from the players behind the No.9 this season too, as can't see us going at teams with an aggressive high press; Southampton carved us open when we got one of those wrong, so better quality teams would find it just as easy.

No not enough goals assists and can't play 90 minutes a player if we are heading towards the end of transfer window we sign we know we are struggling.

He wasn’t even that good last season.

We have to be better in centre mid next season, and Cajuste isn’t the answer. I don’t particularly think Azor is either, even though he’s been our best player this season.

Vigorous nod
I think we need the following at a minimum;
Keeper
Right back
Centre half
3 centre mids
2 10s
2 centre forwards

I do like Dan Neill though, I know he hasn’t pulled up any trees but something about his aggression and experience and his good bloke-ness appeals to me. I’d move Jens on though.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
