Jens Cajuste would be better for us next season… 19:40 - May 5 with 5809 viewsSitfcB

…as he was last season, it’s weird but probably he suits the Premier League better? He was a standout performer.

Would a starting midfield pairing of him and Matusiwa be acceptable?

Vigorous nod
I think we need the following at a minimum;
Keeper
Right back
Centre half
3 centre mids
2 10s
2 centre forwards

I do like Dan Neill though, I know he hasn’t pulled up any trees but something about his aggression and experience and his good bloke-ness appeals to me. I’d move Jens on though.

Competition for Leif at LB is an absolute must too.

You've neglected to mention the need for a first-choice right winger too.

There's your dozen new signings.

Not sure about the need for a right sided player. Mcateer has come good and SWE will be much better after a pre season with McK.
I also don’t think we need competition for Leif with Ben Johnson there.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I'd be fine with Jens as fourth (or fifth, backing up ten?) midfielder. He was better in the Prem than the Championship. We certainly need one or two high quality players to compete for the 8ish role though. Elsewhere, oddly I am optimistic that Azón would be more effective in the PL than the Champ too, though not our player next year of course (at least not yet). There are players whose style suits one more than the other. Davis really struggled coming up, though I'm hoping experience will mean it's easier this time. Greaves could go either way. Mehmeti might benefit from a little more space for instance. Hirst, on the other hand, doesn't have much more of a ceiling I fear, nor, probably, Akpom. Furlong might get caught out much more often. It's going to be really tough, but I do sort of agree with McKenna that we're in a better position this time - goal prevention has been much better this year, it's a good basis to build on.

I would argue a right sided player is one of our highest priorities.

I don't think you can rely on a player who has had two seasons with us and done very little in the hope he will come good.

Neil seems nice enough, but he's very sleight and spindly. He, Philogene & Clarke together lol like a group of young teenagers kicking about, and I think there needs to be some summer bulking up strategy.

This. Baffled that someone thinks McAteer and SWE are enough on the right wing in the hardest league in the world...

Jens and Azor would be a stronger pair than Jens and (past his peak) Morsy were, but as has been noted that is not a high bar to be measuring against.

So agree with all who say Jens would at best be a squad player, we need better. Even when on form, he's always struggled to do 80 mins never mind 90+.

Remember we'd also taken a punt on Kalvin Phillips which looked like a coup but didn't pay off (out of curiosity I just checked his record since joining Sheff Utd, it's not great!). Hopefully we have more luck with whoever we bring in this time round. We can't expect either Neil or Taylor to bridge that gap, IMO.

I have got a ton of respect for Mcateer for the way he has gone about business this season, amazing attitude and got some strong physical attributes.

But I think you are probably looking at 2 new Right wingers this summer. I wonder if a loan would suit Mcateer so he can get 40+ games under his belt that he probably needs and deserves at this point in his career and if you go down you have him for the champ.

I don't mind keeping McAteer as second or third choice. He's definitely better than many have given him credit for, especially his finishing attributes. He's a strong presser too.

But SWE should be more of a 10 and Burns will surely leave, leaving a gaping hole to be filled. Dario Osorio is the name I'm hearing...

Osorio is a nice player. Wonder if he fancies brining Franculino with him.

Presumably SWE is not counted in the squad as an u21, so he can lead my a player for a position and more a squad player who can develop into where is best for him. Even if Burns stays, we need a right sided newbie

Osorio is arguably a more physical/intense version of Omari.

Can go either way, blistering acceleration and good pressing. But 6ft height to boot.

He looks really good - two footed, quick, great passer - though I guess there is a question around dealing with intensity/physicality of the PL as with anyone coming in. But he'd be a great option. And only 22.

I think his physical attributes are some of his strong points, so I'd back him to hit the ground running.

Having a fellow Chilean in the squad could tip the scales in our favour too...

I remember thinking this about Jermaine Wright.

However, we've seen Cajuste in the Premier League, and personally I wasn't bowled over. Our midfield was overrun too easily, and didn't create enough. If Delap hadn't created so much for himself, our results would've been even worse.

Morsy had more PPG than Cajuste in the Prem, and a school of thought seems to have developed that Morsy was past it. Not sure about that myself, but we did let him go for nothing. I think we've tried twice now with Cajuste, and I think we can do better. If Kieran disagrees, then fine, that means I'm just plain wrong.

Pretty sure people said the same last summer. 'Championship cheat code' wasn't it? He's been really poor this season and given us very little value for the reported 2m EUR loan fee and presumably big wage. He wasn't standout last time either, hence he didn't seem to be blessed with offers, he was just marginally more effective than a half fit Phillips.

Wish him well, but he's not going to help us bridge that gap to the premier league.

Speed does kill and we don't have very much if any of it in attacking areas.
