You’re looking in hindsight as you need to consider when the Akpom deal was agreed there was a greater expectation of impact. Likewise Burns continues to come back from a horrendous injury, and has had some other niggles. I’d love Burns to stay but we can’t make judgement on deals arranged 9 months ago and need to see what happens down the right side.
I em expecting MacAteer to continue to have a bigger role and impact, the last 6 weeks have certainly shown he can deliver more and more.

Yeah, that's not the same thing at all. It wasn't a considered thought out decision based on our position as a club going back to the prem and the season the player had. It was an agreement based on the hopes of what a player could be at the start of last season. Apples and oranges.
I'm torn with Burns. Would love him to stay, my heart says keep. But my brain says we should be able to do better and we need the squad space. But I'd love to see him stay and really add something in the prem. |  | | |

Two things, very much depends on what offers he gets elsewhere - if he can secure a better pay day from another club - I wouldn't begrudge him at all.

In my view, our best right-sided attacking option this season, and I think he played a key part in getting us over the line.

Let's be honest, he's not going to be asking for crazy money and he's worth the two year deal for the intangibles alone, his understanding of the system, ability to drive standards in training, his culture fit, his affinity with the fans ..

Hmm, now that would be interesting.
As others have said, he's been our best RW option this season when he's been available. Against competition who have cost eye-watering sums.
What would it mean for McAteer? Egeli? Aspirations to sign an Azeez?
As I understand it, Egeli doesn't count for a squad place, so at least in those terms I suppose we could accommodate Burns. But if McKenna wants to sign another young and talented RW with a "high ceiling" and potential re-sale value, I'm not really sure how we make the numbers work and keep everybody happy. It's not like Burns can realistically double as a RB in the Prem. And I can't see McAteer being shipped off, because we spent a lot on him, his form did improve, and Kieran does clearly think he has something. Having spent so much on that position already, can we afford to keep splashing the cash at the expense of other positions that desperately need an upgrade?

It's a balance between what he wants and how valuable the club (dispassionately) thinks he is going to be - particularly the length of contract.
I'd have thought that, assuming he can avoid injury, a season of playing in the Prem will do no harm to Burns' "last big contract" prospects. It would delay the inevitable drift down the divisions for another year when he is, really, still in his footballing prime at 31.
I'd personally say keep, but perhaps not a long contract. |  |

I can't blame him for playing the 'I appreciate the offer on the table, I'd dearly love to stay at Town, and clearly the fans do too; but I can't ignore Team X's offer' card. If I was in his shoes, I'd want to see if I could get Town to match the offer and save me the upheaval of moving. | |
