Axel would be a very good signing.

One of the players who performed well in the Prem.

He seemed to get back on track until his freak accident.

IMO better than Kipre for depth in the squad but certainly not going to move the needle. Also injury prone.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Christ no!

Was never as good as people said and always injured, and wants loads of wages (£45k a week at Burnley). No thanks

Absolutely not. 13 games this season only. He and we have moved on.

Quietly having a good game tonight. Composed, strong and quick. Fitness is the question, not talent.

Was absolutely excellent tonight

Definitely a premier league player when fully fit

Why? Injury and accident prone.

Lots of obsession again with players who were part of a failed attempt to stay in PL last time. Massive failings. Must do better

Nah, best let that ship sail away. Good player but too many ifs

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

Wouldn't worry at all if we signed him. Can't remember him making a mistake.

TWTD CP. Evans Out.

He's a cracking player. Has he had an injury-plagued season at Burnley? I see he's only played 12 games for them.

If we already had a top notch PL RB, we could maybe go into a half-season with Axel as backup bearing in mind his injury record (playing the odds), but I think Furlong is already our playing the odds (pace rather than injury record) backup right back and as such we need a solid, robust first choice right back. Unfortunately.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Good player, but his fitness worries me.

When fit he's a very good player. Quick, strong, good one v one defender, decent enough on the ball, and reads the game well. But he can't stay fit and be relied on to play 30+ games a season. He's 28 and he's never managed a 30+ game season, he's played fewer than 150 games in his whole career. We can't gamble on him suddenly becoming really robust at this stage and being able to play week in and week out and his use as someone who might manage 15-20 games across three spells in the season is quite limited.

Hate to say it but this isn't much in PL terms.

I'm with the OP. I'd love to see Axel back, thought he was excellent here. But, sadly... just too injury prone for us to gamble on.

Imagine our average wage will need to be North of that this season to have much chance of staying up

It is for a RB for a lower half side.

Just for comparable salaries:-
Kayode - £40k
Jimenez (bmouth) - £18k
Gusto - £45k
Justin - £35k
Lewis (man CIty) - £25k
O'Brien - £30k
Bogle - £30k

There are a lot better defenders on the same/similar money than him. Presumably he's on a bit higher because its a 1 year contract.

Even so, he was never as good as people said. One person above said he never made a mistake........i'm sure he did!

Tbf he didn’t make many, comfortably a premier league player and a good one. However record of staying fit is patchy at best and salary is huge for someone who on average sits out at least half the season.

The only Muff in Town.

Most figures you see for player salaries on the internet are just guesses (it's private information).

All of those salaries would very much be on the low side for a Premier League footballer. To take one example: In 2024-25 Brentford were paying £2.5m per week in wages and salaries. Some of that will go to non-playing staff and non-first team footballers, but even half of it works out at £50k per week per first team player.

we're talking about right backs. If you exclude the top 6 teams, there probably isn't many on over £60k.

I cannot see us wasting £45k a week on a RB who plays less than half the games.

I'll have to agree to differ with most on how good he was.

Axel was available for fewer than half Burnley's games, so totally agree we shouldn't revisit him.

These days I'd be surprised if full back wages were markedly lower than other position. They're just as important as any other player and it'll be their importance to the team that dictates wages. I'd imagine Leif is up there with our top earners.
