Jealous guy by Roxy Music

So good I actually thought it was the original

And one I never even realised was a cover:

Originally on Springsteen's debut album, along with Blinded by the Light, but in a completely different style.

This version though, in an arena, with 75,000 people singing along...

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Saw The Unthanks deliver a great cover of 'Shipobuilding' a couple of weeks ago, Rachel and Becky singing backing vocals to Adrian McNally taking the lead. Anyway, another entirely predictable cover by them but I had no knowledge of Davey Dodds, a West Country folk musician who turned the nursery rhyme into a song https://www.daveydodds.com/abo

PMJ does loads of fantastic covers, but this one really stands out, as the original is bloody awful, and this is superb.

I could PMJ spam this thread all day!

But I will restrict myself to these:

Shows that Wannabe is a really well structured song.

And

The lead singer, Puddles Pity Party, has an incredible ability to convey emotional nuance in a song.

He also sang with Postmodern Jukebox on this, which was used as a John Lewis Christmas Advert track:

Poor Ray Davies, people keep on making a decent fist of covering his songs...

The original got so overplayed it became annoying but this is a thing of beauty

Also

I think this is better than Costello though

Edit: I clearly responded to the wrong post, I find it nearly impossible to use twtd on a mobile.... Obviously this was meant to be in response to Elvis Costello covering I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself

Muse - Feeling good

Yes it's far better than the original, but next to Nina Simone it just comes across as entirely performative emotion and cliche.

Ever so slightly tongue-in-cheek, but Neal Morse's 8-minute prog epic of Bridge Over Troubled Water is utterly superb:

This is beautiful. Eva Cassidy thought she was suffering from a cold when she did this gig. It was in fact Cancer and 10 months later she was dead. A fitting epitaph.

'Leonard Cohen expressed deep admiration for Jeff Buckley's haunting 1994 cover of 'Hallelujah'. He famously remarked on the sheer beauty of Buckley's rendition, going so far as to describe it as an embodiment of exactly what the song was intended to be.'

A wise man once told me that you prefer Buckley until you grow up, when you prefer Cohen. I tend to agree.

Muse - Feeling good

I used to like muse after their first album, Showbiz. But then someone pointed out Matt Bellamy's audible sharp intake of breath before every single line and now I can't ever listen to them again without that being all I hear

As far as covers go, this version of Head over Heals is beautiful

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
