God Save the King (or Queen) is actually the Royal Anthem used through tradition, but not formally declared as the National Anthem.

All the more reason never to sing it. "" Rebellious Scots to crush, God save the King "" National anthems are supposed to be unifying. We'd struggle to pick a song to alienate Scottish people, atheists, and republicans more! [Post edited 8 Jun 16:55]

| Would you sing the national anthem if you played for England on 16:37 - Jun 8 by Churchman | Well if you are going to put a timeline on it, why choose the chunk when Britain had an Empire? The Germans and the Japanese along with the Belgians was 20th century but they are proud of their country and not vilified for it. Go back before the British Empire and the Spanish rubbed out whole cultures in S America and stole everything they could lay their hands on. Oh and the Americans didn’t abolish slavery until the 1860x and colonised (stole) Hawaii at the end of the 19th century and seem to love their country. Nearly forgot, France re-introduced slavery at the start of the 19c as Napoleon was a bit short of manpower while raging around Europe - yet they love their country. No guilt there methinks. Lastly, the Empire doesn’t exist through the Commonwealth. It’s the other way around and was set up to benefit all, not just Britain. |
I was just saying that could possibly be why. I'm not putting a timeline on anything FWIW Spain, France and Germany all have a difficult relationship with their pasts too

It’s actually a prayer, isn’t it? I like the Italian one. It’s sort of two for the price of one and very jolly. The German one makes you want to invade somewhere and I quite like the Spanish effort. The Dutch tune is miserable but the French has always been a bit of a banger. A fave though is the Russian one which will come in handy when they take over this country.

It’s possible to have love for your country and to have great pride in it but still question some aspects of it as well as being critical of its past. There’s a difference between patriotism and blind nationalism.

Have to admit, always liked the Russian and Italian. Always disappointed that the Spanish players never sing theirs

Those lazy Spaniards can never be bothered to sing the words to their anthem. I think that shows an obvious lack of pride and passion.

| Would you sing the national anthem if you played for England on 13:57 - Jun 8 by Wallingford_Boy | Why on earth would anyone not sing the anthem of their country, when it is being played before a game? Or do you mean because of the fact the TV can hear you sing, in that case, a more valid question. If you are born and bred English, to not sing it should be a criminal offence. |
Trolling or idiocy? | | | |
